Governor's race, Democrat Javier Becerra made
history last night becoming California's
first Latino elected governor after defeating Republican Steve Hilton.
Becerra will succeed Governor Gavin Newsom,
who will step down due to term limits.
Now, even though Becerra is about to begin his term,
the Republican candidate Steve Hilton
says he is not done working for change in California.
Gigi Gracia is live in Commerce now with more.
Good morning.
Good morning. It's certainly a very big win for Javier Becerra
and a historic one, too.
He becomes the first elected Latino governor of California.
He's not the first Hispanic to hold the office.
That dates back to actually 1875.
But Governor Pacheco, he promoted to that role. So it's much different.
Becerra going down in the history books, accepting the win last night,
welcoming California to what he calls the Becerra era.
Tonight I have a message for all
those who have been made to feel afraid.
There's a new sheriff in town.
He's got a law degree and a union card.
And a lawyer
and the son of Mexican immigrants.
Javier Becerra often shares the story of how
his parents came to the United States.
With only $12 and a dream
and how they always stress the importance of education,
Becerra would go on to graduate with a law degree from Stanford in 1984
and has now served more than 35 years in state and federal office
and over the years represented various districts
in the Los Angeles area.
The 68-year-old beating Republican
opponent Steve Hilton by double digits.
The former California Attorney General and U.S. Health...
Health and Human Services Secretary says he didn't run to make history.
He ran to serve the state,
both those who voted for him and those who didn't.
Now, Hilton also conceded last night,
saying it wasn't a good year to run as a Republican,
but stressed that no matter what, change is coming.
People...
In this state are crying out for change and it is our responsibility
to fight like never before to bring that change to the people
of California who really need us now more than ever.
So change may be delayed, but change is coming.
Now, Becerra is expected
to basically continue Governor Gavin Newsom's policies.
Governor Newsom is termed out.
He does have a heavy workload ahead,
including working on the state budget
and naming the education commissioner.
Reporting live in Commerce this morning, I'm Gigi Gracia.
Back to you.
G, thank you.
We are also following the race for California Attorney General.
Incumbent Rob Bonta has defeated.
Republican challenger Michael Gates.
Gates, the former Huntington Beach city attorney,
ran on a tough-on-crime platform.
California voters made big decisions on some 14 statewide propositions.
Prop 39, a look at the results right here with 59% reporting in.
This will not pass.
This would have prohibited citizens from voting
unless they present government-issued identification.
Prop 40, the one-time billionaire tax, will not pass.
It was a levy of a 5% tax on certain taxpayers
with assets over a billion dollars.
This would go to fund state health programs,
food assistance, and public education.
California Proposition 44 is failing.
The prop requires health care facilities
to spend 90% of annual revenue on mission-related purposes.
Prop 1 passes. This one borrows a record-breaking $11.2 billion for
affordable housing for low-income renters and homeless Californians.
We'll be sharing results all throughout the morning.
