Here at home, still no winner declared
in the race for Los Angeles mayor.
This is a look right now at the latest numbers.
You have Nithya Raman leading with a very slim margin,
51%, to Karen Bass, 48%, with now 63% reporting.
And thousands of ballots are still being counted as we speak.
So, what are voters saying about the races this morning?
Yeah, lots of folks waking up to all of this news.
Mario is live at a 24-hour diner
in Silver Lake with some reaction there.
Hey there.
Yeah, that's right.
Astro Family Restaurant here in Silver Lake,
and this is the place where people are grabbing
their coffee, their early morning breakfast,
and of course talking about the election news
the day after Peter and Lauren.
They live here in Silver Lake,
but they were actually in Paris, was it, for the last six
months?
So talk to me about what that was like.
You arrived last night.
Well, I mean, we've been following
the election the whole time we've been gone.
So we were very...
I was anxious on the flight, not knowing what was happening, and then
when we finally arrived, it was amazing and joyful, and I was ecstatic.
Thank you very much.
Yeah, now, I would imagine it was a challenge to get your ballots.
Talk to me about the process being over there.
It wasn't too bad because we have somebody staying at our house,
so when it came in the mail...
The very next day, I had them send it out to us,
to Paris, so then we fast-tracked it
back, so it wasn't too bad,
and we did that both for the primary and the general, so it
worked out well.
Very good.
I won't hold you guys too long.
I don't want your food to get cold.
I know it's good here at Astro Diner, so thanks for talking to us.
Now, there's a reason why this could take
quite some time before we learn who will leave
the city of L.A. for the next four years.
Take a look.
I want to show you some video here.
About how this is being handled, this process.
You can see that an L.A. County Sheriff's helicopter dropping off
those ballots in the city of Industry.
They will then be prepared for scanning and counting.
Now, we know Mayor Bass addressed supporters in Hollywood last night.
She expressed confidence as she fights for a second term.
Take a listen to a little bit of that.
We just say it takes a while to count the vote in our city.
But pretty soon we shall know.
And I am confident with all of the work that is done here.
I believe in the city,
and I will always fight
for the city that we deserve.
With me, this,
more, years.
Past campaigning on her record,
pointing to reductions in crime and street homelessness.
Now her challenger, Nithya Raman,
rallied supporters at the Greek theater.
Listen here.
We built this little campaign.
And we have shown.
That we can believe in again,
can dream of a city that builds, that welcomes, that takes
care of its people.
That is worth fighting for every single day of our lives.
Lucky, how lucky are we
to be in this fight together.
Thank you, Los Angeles.
I love you.
Now, Raman is seen hitting the dance floor after
that speech with supporters.
Her campaign focused on bringing change to City Hall.
She's criticized the mayor's handling
of homelessness and city spending.
Now, there are a lot of people
who are visiting here in Southern California, like Sam from London,
waking up as you're visiting this part
of the state here to some big elections.
What do you think?
Well, I think it seems like an amazing wave.
I mean, I don't...
I follow American politics closely, but I do follow world politics,
and for a long time I've just been really puzzled by how long Trump
and his gang can continue and have held power in this country,
which seems so...
It's a place I love. I lived here a long time ago,
and I've always thought it was a place that loves...
It's a very reasonable and kind and good place.
And I love the Americans I know.
But I've never really understood how Trump has held power for so long.
So I feel like it feels like a good morning to me.
Well, appreciate your perspective, Sam.
So that is the latest here at Astro Diner in Silver Lake,
hearing from all kinds of people.
And we'll keep you posted here on Good Day LA,
watching that mayoral race very closely.
