Learned that the victim was a bank teller who wrapped up work on Friday
and then came out to this promenade for a run.
But tonight, police say she is in grave condition,
in their words, and that she is on life support.
Because there is so little evidence for them to go on,
the police are issuing a desperate plea to the public
for their help to generate some leads in this case.
Let's show a picture of 28-year-old Katie Suarez.
It was around 8 p.m. on Friday night that she was running out here
when she was suddenly attacked.
Now, police, because they have
so little evidence to go on in this case, spent today looking
for clues with NYPD divers,
even searching the waters off this promenade, likely looking
for things that include a knife
that might have been used in this attack.
Now, on land, uniformed officers were handing out flyers
to people along this busy promenade
where people walk, run, cycle,
hoping that somebody might have noticed a would-be attacker.
Now, Katie Suarez had just spoken with her parents.
during her run on friday night
and they were waiting in a parked car about a
half mile from here a distance that would have taken her as a runner
about five minutes to cover
when they didn't see her they felt something
was wrong and came to search this promenade
along the bell parkway and that's
when her father found katie on the ground
with a trail of blood running about a hundred feet today the
oipd's chief of detectives sat with fox 5 telling us that because
this area has no surveillance cameras
investigators have used license plate
readers
And identified 1,700 license plates
that went through this area on the Belt Parkway
in a narrow window the minutes before and after the attack.
And he says they're prepared
to contact every single one of those drivers
to see if they might have something helpful like dashboard cameras
that can give them some crucial clues in this case.
Take a listen in.
As of right now, we only have one
additional 911 caller besides the dad.
So we're looking for additional witnesses
or if anybody can come forward
to tell us if they saw anything suspicious that evening.
Now at this point police tell us they believe this was a random attack.
Our sources also point out to us that the motive is a mystery
because the victim still had her phone on her and was wearing jewelry.
They say there is no evidence that this was a robbery
or sexual assault. Nonetheless, in order to motivate people
to help with this case, they are offering a $10,000 reward.
