For the San Francisco Golden Gate Half Marathon and 5K race,
KTVU's Devin Truby was there
and talked to a competitor with an incredible story of determination.
Starting in a true post-Halloween fashion,
Half Marathon runners were let out onto the
course with the theme from Ghostbusters.
Who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters!
5k marathon runners followed shortly after like this mom
who traveled all the way from Illinois
to join and support her son.
Well my son is running the half marathon so I'm tagging along.
We used to run together when I was younger
and he's always been a runner so yeah it's nice to
do this with him. There were lots
of families out running together including Dario Demko,
his wife Victoria, their daughter-to-be expected in December
and his neuro exercise specialist
My second attempt to complete a 5K.
After suffering a spinal cord injury,
and my hope is to finish it in under three hours,
so that would be at least
a 20-minute improvement over my last performance.
He was injured two and a half years ago, technically quadriplegic.
In July, he completed a 5K in Napa in a little over three hours.
When I was injured
and I was told that I would never be able to walk again,
it was a really hard pill to swallow, and sort of running has been.
Something that has been an anchor for my recovery.
He and his team hope to show others what's possible.
Just don't limit yourself, right?
You're oftentimes after a catastrophic injury, you'll get told.
Certain things.
Thanks.
Good job bud.
Just go as hard as you can go and don't limit yourself.
The race is a unique course that allows half marathoners to go back
and forth across the Golden Gate Bridge.
KTVU's own Bailey O'Carroll was out running her half marathon
after a long night of Golden State
Valkyries finals win coverage for us.
Reporting in San Francisco, Devin Truby, KTVU, Fox 2 News.
