New tonight, a Bridgeport mother
who is the sole caregiver for her quadriplegic son
says a broken elevator has turned her family's apartment into a prison.
News 12's Frank Recchia joins us now with their story.
Imagine living on the upper floor of an apartment complex,
then having the elevator go out,
leaving you with no way to get
your disabled loved one safely out of the building.
I'm scared.
Well, that's exactly the situation 57-year-old Julaine Cyril
of Bridgeport finds herself in.
Her son Manny has cerebral palsy, and she says their journey together
has been a long series of bumpy roads that just got bumpier.
She says the problem is that the one elevator
in the four-story building they live in
here on Lindley Street has been broken for about four months.
And it's not just Manny
Jolene is responsible for.
Her 85-year-old mom, who is also disabled, lives with her as well.
I want to.
Leave this place because it's not safe for my family.
She's a wonderful mom.
Family friend Patty Newton says she's
been reaching out to the people in charge here
for months, but has gotten nowhere.
It's insane for a person to pay their rent
and not be able to have security
to go on the elevator because she's on the top floor.
And Jolaine says she's not been able to bring
her son or her mom to a single medical appointment
since the elevator outage began.
They want their rents.
But they don't want to fix the problem.
And we've reached out to both the landlord and the property manager.
We'll let you know when we hear back.
In Bridgeport, Frank Recchia, News 12.
