Earth Facing X-17 Solar Flare That Released A Halo CME!

James Kaufman, World News Report Today. X17 solar flare, earth-facing, that released a coronal mass ejection. What happened 22 years ago today? Remember, 22 years ago is the exact peak of the 2003 solar cycle peak, as they occur every 11 years. And we have returned to that exact point and position. A history-making solar storm occurred on this day, October 28, 2003, exactly 22 years ago again today. One of the most powerful solar flares in years erupted from Giant Sunspot 486 this morning at approximately 1110 UTC time. The blast measured an X-17 on the Richter scale of solar flares. As a result of the explosion, a strong S3-class solar radiation storm is currently underway. The explosion also hurled a Large Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME, towards Earth. When it left the sun, the cloud was traveling at 2,125 kilometers per second, or almost 5 million miles per hour. This CME could trigger bright auroras when it swoops past our planet, perhaps as early as tonight. Such clouds are called Halo CMEs, as you can make out a full halo around the Sun. In this chronograph picture, we all know that the speckles that we are seeing are the actual solar protons striking the chronograph's CCD camera. Of course, that only got much worse. Where did the aurora borealis appear? Well, in high latitudes, such as New Zealand, Scandinavia, Alaska, Canada, U.S. northern Northern states, from Maine to Washington. Well, at least that's where they were favored. NASA also mentioned they could extend to lower areas near the equator. Descend to lower areas was one of the truest things NASA has ever said, if not the only truth they've ever told. During the next 24 hours, people in Georgia, Texas, California, and even Mexico We're photographing historic displays of northern lights or northern borealis. Thus, the Halloween solar storm of 2003 was something to remember.
