James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Don't look up.
Fireballs inbound for Halloween.
Right now, Earth is passing through
a stream of debris from Comet 2P/Encke,
which is the source of the annual Halloween fireball event.
This meteor shower is technically known
as the Southern Taurids meteor shower
and is known for large, slow-moving meteors.
The shower peaks in late October and early November,
thus its nickname, the Halloween
Fireball Meteor Shower. These slow-moving meteors streak
from the constellation Taurus during the
weeks around Halloween,
and the debris trail contains larger-than-usual rocks and debris,
so reports usually shoot up during this time period.
Most people don't realize this.
But most of the meteors,
i.e. falling stars that we look up and see in the night sky,
are as small as a grain of sand.
Very few ever make it to Earth's surface,
although there are exceptions.
If you look up while you're trick-or-treating tonight,
there's a very good chance you may see one
of these Halloween fireballs.
Or meteors, which could foreshadow something genuinely scary.
What do I mean by that?
Well, the latest peer-reviewed research on the shower suggests
that hazardous Tunguska-class objects may be lurking within the stream.
And, according to scientists, Earth...
Could very well be hit by one of these Tunguska-class objects
in 2030 during the meteor shower.
What is a Tunguska-class object?
Well, you know I had to look it up.
A Tunguska-class object is a term used to describe an object,
a stony asteroid, comet, or meteor
similar to the one that caused the 1908 Tungsta event.
These objects are estimated to be between 30 and 60 meters in diameter,
so about 100 to 200 plus feet in diameter,
and explode in the atmosphere rather than hitting
the ground, releasing tremendous amounts
of energy equivalent to 10 to 20 megatons
of TNT. This atmospheric explosion
or airburst can cause significant destruction.
To the surface of Earth below.
Again, they think one very well might be inbound for 2030.
So really do look up.
It should be quite a show tonight.
Happy Halloween.
God bless.
