This is your sign to head to the thrift store
and pick up the biggest old
lampshade you can find and cut off the fabric. I grabbed the
lampshade and began removing the fabric from the frame.
I used a box cutter and good scissors to cut the fabric open,
then ripped it from the frame.
In my experience, some lampshades are easier to
deconstruct than others, depending on how much glue was used. To
continue the transformation of this lampshade,
I unraveled the rope and began the foundation row.
I hot glued the end of the rope to one corner of the lampshade frame,
then continued hot gluing and attaching the rope to the frame.
I made sure to make this row as straight as possible
and to ensure that it was very well
attached. I simply continued this pattern all the way around
and up the lampshade,
making sure to hot glue the rope directly
to the frame periodically to prevent sagging.
Once the rope was a few inches above the top of the frame, I cut it,
tucked in the end, then decided to fold the edges over the top
and hot glued them in place.
Next, I measured the bottom of the lampshade,
or what was the original top, to find the
dimensions, then I cut a piece of cardboard
a little bit smaller than that.
I simply wrapped that piece of cardboard
in some scrap fabric I had on hand and hot glued
that in place.
Then I place the cardboard in the bottom.
And that's it! Now I have a cute functional
basket that works well in my entryway especially for fall and winter.
It's perfect for storing
hats and gloves, umbrellas,
and our soccer equipment so that it's ready to go whenever
we're headed out the door.
I hope this inspired you to upcycle an old lampshade into a cute
Functional basket for your entryway too.
