This is one of my favourite Russian salads. The success of this recipe is in the herring, if it is fresh, slightly salted your salad will be unforgettable. This recipe for Russian Herring under Fur Coat Salad, known as shuba or seledka pod shuboĭ (cеледка под шубой), is a traditional Russian and Latvian layered salad made of finely chopped pickled herring, eggs, beets, carrots, potatoes and some type of dressing, either mayonnaise or a sour cream base. This recipe takes about 30 min to make it and it serves 6-8 people. It is a must for every Russian holiday. This salad requires some time and agility to assemble it, also it needs at least 6 hours for layers to soak after it is assembled. So make sure you have enough time before you plan to serve it.
Hi guys! Welcome to my channel.
Today I'm making something very traditional in Latvia and Russia.
It's called Seledka pod Shuboy.
It's a very specific salad that everybody eats here on weddings,
birthdays, any sort of celebration.
So it's really, really tasty.
It's very specific, so sometimes if you've never tried this before,
you either like it or you don't like it.
But I'm going to show you. I love this dish
and I really hope you like it too.
This salad serves about six people and the ingredients we're going
okay so here I've got three pieces of herring.
You can get this anywhere in the UK.
You can get it definitely anywhere in Russia or Latvia.
It's just sold in bulk. Here I've got one massive beetroot.
Now if you don't have such a big one just use a small two
or three ones. I've got three eggs and three potatoes and mayonnaise.
Okay, so I've boiled my potatoes and beetroot.
Now you have to boil them until they're quite soft.
Here we can see I've grated it, beetroot and potatoes.
I've cut the herring into small chunks,
and so I did the same with an egg.
Now, I've got a plate like this.
We usually, that's a tradition, to put it in a plate like this here.
You can use kind of any plates, whatever shape you want to create.
The principle is the same.
We just layer the salad into different layers,
and I'll show you how I do it.
So now we're going to layer our salad
and first of all we're going to use potatoes and herring,
then mayonnaise, then we're going to have egg
and beetroot mayonnaise and we repeat that process
until pretty much everything's finished
but the beetroot goes last on top.
And now you can see how I do it.
Okay, just finished. Look at this beautiful, beautiful dish.
Now I've decorated with a bit of mayonnaise, like a zigzag,
and I've put a bit of crumbs of the leftover eggs, a bit of leaves.
You can also use the dill, that's more traditional,
but it was so colourful and green.
I'm going to cut it later and I'm going to eat it as well.
I'll post the pictures how it looks inside.
It's got different layers. It looks really, really pretty.
Guys, I really hope you try this dish.
Don't be scared of all the combinations. Trust me, you will love it.
