Some Nunavut communities encouraging safe Halloween with earlier trick-or-treating
Oct 31, 2026
The hamlet of Iglulik changed its hours for trick-or-treaters
from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. instead of during the evening.
That came after it asked residents via Facebook if they wanted
their children to go trick-or-treating during the day.
Ruby Panec is the office manager for Municipality of Iglulik.
She said the feedback was mostly positive.
As it is getting dark out in...
With the heavy foot traffic that is required
for trick-or-treating, and as it is dark,
it may be safer for us to do our trick-or-treating throughout.
Rankin Inlet is making the same change
to reduce the risks of trick-or-treating after dark.
Wesley Inuksuk says heavy vehicle traffic in the evening on Halloween
poses a risk to families walking around.
The hamlet has also struggled with theft.
Some kids take away.
Baker Lake issued a statement
also recommending earlier trick-or-treating from 4 till 6 in the
afternoon. But while the candy might get handed out
in the afternoon this year, that doesn't mean
the fun ends when the sun goes down.
Both Iglulik and Rankin Inlet will hold costume contests
later in the evening at their community centres.
