U.S. Marine Base in Japan fighting off
an invasion of poisonous spiders.
U.S. Marine Corps Air Station, MCAS,
Camp Kinser in Japan has been dealing with an invasion of venomous spiders,
including redbacks and black widows, since at least July 2025.
Authorities believe the spiders arrived on military aircraft.
The military has exterminated over 3,500 of them since then,
raising concerns about them spreading outside the base.
Invasion primarily involves redback spiders,
black widows, and gray widow spiders,
which have all been deemed invasive species in Japan.
Between July and October 2025,
officials captured and exterminated over 3,500 of these spiders.
At the marine base, the problem is that all three of these species
of spiders produce offspring at an incredibly fast rate,
and the military does not believe that they can get ahead
of this problem, which appears to be growing even
with all the efforts to exterminate them.
The greatest concern is that the spiders will spread beyond the base
and pose a threat to the local community.
Experts believe the spiders have likely arrived on military aircraft
from regions like the United States and Southeast Asia.
Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni has been implementing
extermination efforts and has worked with the Japanese government
to erect a barrier to prevent the spiders from leaving the base.
They've also made sure that no tall grass
is anywhere near the base's exterior.
as this may give the spiders a way to escape
although some have already been found off base.
These spiders are venomous but are not aggressive
and will not attack unless backed into a corner if provoked
But the bites will cause illness especially in the elderly,
young and sick if bitten.
People should seek immediate medical attention.
In almost all cases the bite will not result in death.
But it is possible.
I guess the Marines should be at least a little thankful
that brown recluse spiders did not catch a ride to Japan yet.
God bless, folks.
What a nightmare.
