The blood glucose level, 179.
For Amira Gee, getting ready for a run takes
a little more than just stretching.
I have my insulin pump.
She has type 1 diabetes,
so keeping track of her blood sugar is important.
Gee was diagnosed about nine years ago while in college.
At first, I thought it was a limitation.
More recently, I've seen it as a benefit.
She's currently a doctoral student at NYU School of Medicine,
studying diabetes before pregnancy and training for her first marathon.
Right in her own backyard.
This church is where I went to school as a kid.
And Gi admits that she's not a runner
and a diabetes training camp actually built her confidence.
But watching her friends run it last
year really inspired her to sign up.
Showing my younger self that you really can do anything.
Yes, you have a diagnosis, but things will be okay.
On Sunday, she'll be joining the Beyond Type 1 team,
hoping to encourage someone else.
You can set a goal that seems really difficult.
But you can train yourself to do well.
As you can see, there's two arrows down.
Uh-huh.
So that means I need some sugar before it goes too low.
And for Gee, having support makes all the difference.
Her mom will be there with backup supplies and plenty of love too.
She can just do what she's doing
and she's not looking at this as a disability.
She's looking at this as an ability to do more.
And Amira's mom here is going
to be right along the route cheering her on,
as well as these little kids from her job as well.
Go Amira, go! Go Amira, go!
