Safety concerns continue to mount Yonkers over a popular intersection.
News 12's Lauren DelVal reports.
Tuesday evening, Yonkers police say officers responded
to the intersection of Bronx River Road
and Midland Avenue for an accident involving a moped scooter and a car.
Video shows a scooter rider heading toward Fleetwood on Midland Avenue
when a car turning left onto Bronx River Road hits the scooter.
The driver of the scooter sustained serious injuries
and was transported to an area hospital where he remains
in critical condition but is expected to survive.
The cause of the accident is under investigation and last year
a pedestrian was struck by a car while crossing the same intersection.
Pedestrians say speeding,
light poles and crosswalk signs that are not working
and out of sync signals have been ongoing concerns.
I witnessed at least two crosswalk signs
and four lights off at the intersection this morning.
We're paying taxes here, just fix the light.
Pedestrians, the safety has to come first.
Do you ever cross here at night?
No, definitely not.
Why is that?
Because I'm probably going to worry about getting hit by a car.
News 12 contacted the city of Yonkers, which said that as of 2.30 p.m.,
two pedestrian signals have been replaced.
Officials add that the intersection has an exclusive pedestrian
crossing phase, which they say is the safest operation for pedestrians.
And a red light camera installed.
Though residents say they would still like to see more.
And people do speed.
There's a speed sign over there that you can see people
are just speeding right through.
So there needs to be more observation of what's going on here.
The city says the traffic engineering department has
no complaints for the intersection.
