Last year, we got hit with a devastating ice storm. The power was out for a week, and we rationed our generator fuel a few hours at a time for electric heat in our half-built apartment. We survived, but it wasn't comfortable. As predictions of another bad winter circulate, I installed a wood-burning heater that will keep our entire shop warm and cozy. We should have enough dried firewood to get us through this winter, but there's no time like the present to start on next year's supply.

I got a lot
of this oak
already
split up and
cutting these into shorter rounds was a good call.
Of course when it's nice straight grain stuff it
splits easy, obviously, but there are so many of these knots
and big chunks in here that are just
brutal to split so this big chunk
when it dries out that one's going in the fire just the way it
is see all these knots right so those are challenging
and fun we'll say this one's got
a bunch of knots going through the side and curly grain
and ah here's what it is it all burns the
same it doesn't matter if it's two smaller chunks
or one longer chunk it all burns the same and it
all goes into our driveway for some reason i don't know why all
of this firewood ends up littered in
our driveway i have no idea why did you put
that there did you put that there for me to run over
in the car did you put that there for me to run over
in the car did you oh it must have been your
brother wasn't you Nolly did you put
that one there okay maybe it was Nolly well you're picking
up after yourself that way oh gosh i don't get onto them
for doing that they're just dogs being
dogs and it's okay i love my dogs uh
so much has happened have you noticed the videos have slowed
down that's because we uh all kinds of all kinds
of fun stuff happened uh we took a break for six
days to go to michigan for a weekend wedding
and that turned out to be a lot of uh a lot of help
and a lot of work getting helping with the wedding
my brother got married congrats to my brother but
that was such a fun trip such
an absolute fun trip i completely shut off the business mentally
it was so needed but as soon as we got back it
was just not really a rush but it was it was
fast pace just just get back in the flow of things
and start checking some boxes i didn't record
hardly any of it and i didn't record any of this i got
the heater installed uh i think i still want
to put one more support bracket right there to the shop uh
but this bracket right here the
instructions said it's rated to support 30 feet
of vertical class a chimney above it and that's
only eight feet right there
so two six uh two three foot sections and a two foot section and
those brackets up there at the top uh those are actually
the top brackets there that come on IBC
totes so i took those off and piled them up
in the corner for use in a later day and very useful for
that that's why i don't have to buy something
and you get up there and you can see that they're kind
of ugly and twisted and whatnot
but from the ground you can't tell the difference and uh who
cares anyway the stove comes out right here uh right inside
the door is the heater i got it
installed uh up to the wall thimble just like
so and i have it on some blocks not to protect the
ground but just to make it a little bit easier uh to load
so you don't have to bend all the way to
the ground for heat shield i just have a piece
of concrete backer board like tiling and it's on a
wooden frame and it's literally just sitting there it's
not touching the back of the blower motor
it's not touching the wall it's not secured
to anything it's literally just sitting there
and that's fine i already had a small fire
in here just to kind of test the blower motor see
if the thermostat's working
and all that everything's good everything's good to go i've
got the pipe all screwed together up here just
to make sure nothing's going to come apart all good
to go and because that chimney pipe outside it
drafts really really well uh i don't i think i
did show this on one of the videos it's made
from a company out of Parsons Tennessee called Toxic
Fabrication and i know that's their branding
and all that good stuff but part of me wants to just
cut this off anyway um it's just tack weld in the three spots i may
or may not cut that off anyway
uh they they include a small plate for us to put whatever we want on it
and i thought why not put
BPO3 we've got of course the fire door put
a little fire in there just to test it like i said
air intake on this side which is just on a little swivel
as well as a bigger air intake over there
as well as the original air intake on the door right there
so this hopefully should last us
forever in this shop hopefully it should i don't see why i wouldn't
and it's thermostat controlled
the blower motor on top kicks on i believe it's set to 110 degrees
and yeah you can adjust the
temperature back there but it's set to 110 degrees
to turn on and then it shuts off at 90 degrees
this blower motor is not that loud
at all it's really quiet much quieter than my air cleaner cart
but i just have it rigged up here with an extension cord
to test this out so uh soon i need to run
electricity over here and i think what i'm going
to do is uh the shop it doesn't the apartment
doesn't matter if we come on this side of the apartment
or that side of the apartment the
electricity run is still the same
because that's you know it's a rectangle so well back up my
initial plan was to go over this i-beam to my sub panel right there uh
but that doesn't offer me any
benefit if I do that it's a little bit shorter of a run
but it doesn't offer me any benefit
if I come from this panel I can piggyback off
that beam come across here right at the eight
foot mark right so there's eight foot OSB on the wall
and you can clearly see the eight foot line
right there come off a little bit higher than
that and that'll allow me to drop down right here
and put some electricity on this wall
when we built the apartment some people were giving me
some flack about not putting outlets on their wall
because I'm going to need outlets on the wall
and my method to the madness there
was i don't know where i want them at that point well now i
do and i can put them exactly where i want to put them uh
and running them on the outside doesn't
matter because if i stay say an inch
or two above that eight foot line then i put my eight foot
vertical boards on the bottom uh
then i can have the electricity right above the top and then from
the top or from the electricity line up we're going
to do horizontal boards just to make it
look a little different and then that'll kind
of leave me a little trough i guess you could say
with electricity line and then I can cap
that with a trim piece very similar to the way I have that
horizontal chair rail on the other shop walls.
So I think it's going to look pretty cool.
It'll allow me to cover up the OSB.
It'll allow me to hide wires through there and it'll allow
me to drop down wires so I don't have to deal
with this extension cord that I've been draping
over the top of here back to there.
It works but I don't want to live like that forever so there's
that uh so firewood is on the brain firewood
is what we need to focus on right now that i didn't
interrupt anything did i you guys you can continue chewing
on each other i love you hey manners
Grace do you have manners good girl Nollie
manners manners Nollie good boy i love you
i
love
you
too
but
you're
so

Brunt these are the Costello tech line of pants
from Brunt these are the Marin boots from Brunt
both of which i give two huge thumbs up
to the the pants are stretchy where they need to be
stretchy they're durable they've got uh rip stop technology
so that means the material is woven in
two different directions
so if you do get a rip it's not going to spread like blue jeans if you
get a little rip in blue jeans well next time you wear them they're
a little bit bigger and a little
bit bigger and then eventually you got
a big problem on your hands as far as work pants
uh the boots are the Marin boots
from Brunt they're super comfortable these are what i call
out of sight out of mind boots if you're thinking about
your boots you're thinking about your feet
throughout the day odds are you're
not really comfortable right with these boots i don't think
about my feet or the boots at all until i'm ready
to take them off at the end of the day they're
really really comfortable uh they've
been my daily drivers since i got them basically and you can get
in a different height. This is the 6-inch height.
You can get them an 8-inch height,
with or without waterproofing,
with or without steel toe. There's quite a few
options for these boots.
They're really, really comfortable. These pants, the
Castello Tech Pants, you can get them in pants or shorts.
A couple different inseam
lengths in the shorts.
Super comfortable combination here. And as you see, I just
jumped up on a bunk of lumber here.
They're stretchy where they need to be
stretchy and allow you to maintain movement
and flexibility while you're
actually working which for me around
this property is an absolute must. Anyway
if you're interested in finding out
a little bit more about any one of these
two items or many other work wear items
that Brunt has I have a link in the
description you can use and a little

little bit of money on your first purchase

I have four of these IBC baskets and all this is
hickory that was cut a few years ago
so this is well seasoned ready to use. I'm gonna consolidate
these. I'll get a free empty basket
or free up one of the empty baskets. I've got one set in here
already and I think I'm actually going to probably pull this back out
and get that smaller one
stacked on top. That's a lot of pretty big hickory
and I've got a lot of wood. I don't I think I have
have enough dry stuff for this winter if not i'll
do like primarily dry stuff and mix in some
green stuff here or there uh just to kind
of ration the dry stuff that that totally depends
on how bad our winter is last year we had
a really bad winter with the ice storm and they're calling
for another really bad winter this year
so uh time will tell but at least we'll have heat
uh not freeze our butts off here regardless of if there's power
or the power goes out yes there
a fan that uh that can distribute that heat
but it doesn't need to be ran just for extra heat for
all the stuff that i'm continuously splitting i'm trying
to split more every day than what we think
what i think we will use in a day
and it's just a thought process i don't i don't have any
experience here in the shop cutting i'm sorry using firewood for heat
although i do have three
years of experience uh cutting firewood
and using it for heat the last three years i lived with my
mom before getting out on my own
so it's not completely new to me it's just been a minute
you know what i'm saying uh
so for all this stuff uh we have two options we i want to lay down a
whole bed of pallets and then just load up all
the stuff in the tractor bucket or all these splits in
the tractor bucket and then just dump it on top
the pallets the pallets will keep it off the ground
and keep airflow running through it uh jamie doesn't want
to do that she wants it to look
nicer and she wants to we she wants us to stack each one
of these pallets so guess who won that
one i guess we pick our battles right
so that's what we're gonna do we're gonna stack each one
of these pallets best we can
at the very least it's actually probably the better idea you hear
that that's probably the better idea
of course i'm glad i came up with it anyway i think it's
probably the better idea that way we can move
the pallets around a lot easier than reloading
into a tractor bucket
and then getting it closer
to the wood stove so i think
that works out quite
well we're basically making an a-frame
so that whatever's on top is holding out the bottom i
think the plan for all these pallets
because we didn't we didn't uh put that big of a dent in here
that is as as big of a dent as i thought i think we're going
to start on the far end of the garden
on the north side because that's where it gets sun all
the time all year round we'll put them
on that side of the fence from that side working
our way this way that way they're out of the way
but they're neatly organized and you'll have full
breeze blowing through the stack of course all this
that i'm chopping up is all green
so that means that this is not this year's stash this is for
next year
i think
all the
bigger
chunks
that have
knots
uh just
too big
to split
even at
shorter
height they're just they're just too crazy to split with a maul
or an axe or just not worth
effort i think for those i'll pile up in the outdoor firewood pile
and once you get a good
hot coal bed going you can set one of those or two of those on there
and let her rip tater chip
you know what i'm saying uh
but jamie's been a big help stacking all this stuff i think these
three logs that i cut up for the last video
are going to end up being four pallets of split wood
although it's not super high stacked on the pallet
the rest of it like i said outdoor firewood
but pretty good yield and also this isn't
the best like I said splitting stuff because all the knots
in it I've got a pile of red oak a stack
of red oak logs that have been sitting for over a year
now the logs have and we anchor sealed the ends for the sawmill
but I cut a bunch of them up for
a friend of ours a relative of ours
and there's just checking all the way through the logs so I
think those nice straight grain logs
which aren't that big anyway when it comes to the sawmill right
the bigger logs is where the majority
of the good quality lumber is and the smaller logs people say
a small log is typically a post log a big log
is typically a lumber log well the majority of those
red oak logs on my sawmill red oak log stack
are really nice straight grain logs so i think that'll
be a good firewood and red oak isn't the best material
for um for furniture around here no one
is interested in red oak i'd rather use hickory
or something else anyway so i think that's where
i'm going to start pulling from uh for good quality splits
and whatnot oh speaking of firewood
like i said previously we listed all
this this firewood we're getting from the tree service
companies for free on facebook marketplace it gives
the tree service company a place to dump
it rather than paying for the landfill i'd hate
to see all this wood go to the landfill anyway
and uh keeps keeps them on our good side you know
what i'm saying yeah you can dump some firewood
here and we could also dump all over
your wood chips here right they've been helping us out
tremendously with wood chips i've got some kid coming later today
to get a bunch of this firewood
he's going to bring his chainsaw i said he's going
to start a trying to start a firewood business
and kudos that's that's awesome that is that's music
to my ears the young kids starting a
business sweat equity i'm all for it
and it saves all this stuff from going from the landfill so
we're helping people out we're helping ourselves out
and uh burning some calories and feeling good
i am going to sleep really good tonight today has
been a pretty physical day i've been on and off
splitting and stacking and splitting
and stacking throughout the day and then uh around lunchtime
today uh Tyler K cashed in a promise i promised
her today that i would jump with her on the
trampoline quite a bit and uh
as a father i know it's extremely important it is to me anyway to
not make promises that i can't keep and then
also deliver on those promises kids really look up to
us and uh don't break promises right
so i promised her i'd jump on the trampoline and by golly i
jumped on the trampoline with her quite a bit
and also split a bunch of stuff and stack today and
yeah i'm gonna sleep good tonight uh
but i would like to get these three pallets moved over to
their destination where they will dry
for the next I don't know year maybe I could use them
at the later part of this winter it's October now
when I'm when I split these and say February or
March if it's still cold I might dig
into this stash maybe maybe not but I got to get to moving
because
I'm
losing
daylight
that
makes
me feel
a little
bit
better
got
these
stacked
out
of the
way and they're somewhat uniform
and as we continue to do firewood we've got plenty enough
space for pallets and if we get
to a point where we have more than we'll need which is going to
happen then we can start selling by the pallet
or something i don't know but anyway calories burned
and boy do i feel good something else
that makes me feel good oh i forgot to shut that camera off
something else that makes me feel good
is the watermelons over here remember we did these
planting uh we planted these watermelons pretty late in the season
and according to the Googles
it wasn't too late for where we live we haven't had
a frost yet it's the middle of October and
we still have plenty of time before we get
our frost we didn't have like massive success but
literally we just walked and spit seeds
and all of the seeds came from one watermelon well we got
one big one right there a medium one right there one
that's getting a little bit big one that's
getting a little bit big uh and some other ones i think there might
be some over there Jamie counted
six out here earlier that earlier today yeah
there's some other weeds and some other stuff
going on in there but hey we've got some watermelons growing
that's pretty cool especially
for just walking and spitting seeds that is it
for me for tonight it is getting darker earlier
and earlier as winter approaches
and uh you know what i tell you what it's been just a huge
sigh of relief and excitement to get
this wood burning stove in the shop completely
finished and buttoned up before winter hits before we actually need it
and knowing that
when the time comes for us to need it it'll be there
and we're not going to freeze our
tushies off this year
so that's good i'll catch you on the next video i am so bad about not
putting the three points down when i'm done
with the tractor for today did it for once i did it
