Halloween weekend travel could be a nightmare for some Boston commuters. Portions of the MBTA Green Line will close Saturday and Sunday for critical signal upgrades, and the MBTA warns that some trips could take at least 25 minutes longer than usual.
Portions of the Green Line will be shut down.
The MBTA says that it needs to perform critical signal upgrades here.
Boston 25 News reporter Kelly Sullivan joining us live now
from the Government Center T-Stop.
Kelly, riders should prepare to add some travel time
if they are using the T this weekend.
Yeah, so absolutely.
The MBTA is suggesting that T riders,
their trip times will be at least 25 minutes longer than usual
because of the service disruption.
So here's why.
Let's show you what's going to be happening this Saturday and Sunday.
this Halloween weekend. So on the B and E lines,
no trains will be running from North Station to
Heath Street or North Station to Babcock Street.
And on the C and D lines, service will be suspended
from North Station to Kenmore.
So how should riders get around the city this Halloween weekend?
Well, the MBTA is offering shuttle service
as well as a free bus service that can take them
to Copley Back Bay, where they can take the Orange Line.
A couple of bus routes will be free as well.
And on the commuter rail,
the Framingham-Worcester line is free between Lansdowne and South Station.
An MBTA spokesperson says the shutdown is necessary
to maintain previous infrastructure upgrades
and also to continue modernization work.
So the service suspension will
be in effect for this Saturday and Sunday.
Again, this Halloween weekend, of course,
again, is expected to be busy,
so riders should budget in that extra travel time.
And then they might have to get used to that because next weekend,
and similar work will be done on similar portions of the Green Line,
so they'll just have to be ready for that once again.
