12 of the state's 14 sheriffs are issuing
a warning about the PROTECT Act, which limits
state and local cooperation with ICE.
It was signed in August. The Sheriff's Association says
the act may have an unintended consequence.
They say one of its provisions would prevent law
enforcement from telling ICE
when a suspect is going to be released on bail, even if the person
committed a violent crime. Republican gubernatorial
candidate Mike Minogue and Governor Mara Healey
reacted yesterday. These are the representatives that have sacrificed
and served their community
for their lives and now we're telling them if they do cooperate
and deport a violent illegal
immigrant criminal they personally are liable
that does not make common sense and it is
inappropriate for the governor to allow
that to happen i don't want ICE in our schools and daycares
for a reason because people need to go there people need
to be able to go to the hospital
And that's what the Protect Act does. That was the intent.
And my opponent will repeal the Protect Act
and wants to double down on ICE's involvement in Massachusetts.
That doesn't make us safe.
The Sheriff's Association says there
are at least 14 suspects with violent charges being held
on less than $1,000 bail right now in the state.
