This is one of my favourite Russian salads. The success of this recipe is in the herring, if it is fresh, slightly salted your salad will be unforgettable. This recipe for Russian Herring under Fur Coat Salad, known as shuba or seledka pod shuboĭ (cеледка под шубой), is a traditional Russian and Latvian layered salad made of finely chopped pickled herring, eggs, beets, carrots, potatoes and some type of dressing, either mayonnaise or a sour cream base. This recipe takes about 30 min to make it and it serves 6-8 people. It is a must for every Russian holiday. This salad requires some time and agility to assemble it, also it needs at least 6 hours for layers to soak after it is assembled. So make sure you have enough time before you plan to serve it.

Add potatoes along with carrots into your pan,
then add some hot water and we're going
to cook this for about 20-25 minutes until they are soft.
Add beetroot into a different pan
and we're going to add hot water and cook it for about
1 hour.
In a different smaller pot,
add your eggs and boil them for about 10 minutes.
Once your potatoes and carrots are done,
drain them and then take off the skin from the potatoes
and your carrots
and leave them to cool down completely.
Chop up your eggs.
I'm using my awesome samurai knives for all
the chopping that I do in my kitchen and I
have 15% discount for all my subscribers.
Next we're going to grate our potatoes into a bowl
and we're going to do the same thing
for the carrots and also the beetroot.
Make sure you place them into different bowls.
Take the herring and cut into small pieces.
Chop your onion nice and fine. You should
have everything ready, your chopped eggs,
herring, onion, potato, carrots and beetroot.
Next we're going to layer our salad.
Add your herring at the bottom, then add one tablespoon
of mayo, then add your grated potatoes.
Press them down so it's nice and squashed. Add another
tablespoon of mayo and then more carrots
then add your chopped onion around this
will give it a nice crunch and add more mayo
and finally add a big layer of your
beetroot and top it up with some crushed egg
and voila there you go guys I hope
you enjoy this
