James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen, as we forecast,
we were just hit the last few hours, the coronal mass ejection.
This was caused by the solar flare that was directed towards Earth
and the coronal mass ejection that spun off
that solar flare on the 18th of March.
We did say that the arrival would
be a little bit earlier than NOAA predicted.
And it looked like we were right on cue here.
You can see for about the last three hours,
we've been in a geomagnetic storm.
And, well, this should continue into the evening tonight.
So we can look for Aurora Borealis.
We're at G1 right now,
but they're headed towards G2 levels, it appears.
An anticipated coronal mass ejection, CME arrived,
and there still could be yet another one to come.
CMEs are eruptions of solar material on magnetic fields
that can lead to enhanced geomagnetic response at Earth.
CME passes should continue through Friday,
possibly into the overnight hours.
to a magnetic response dependent upon
the orientation of the embedded magnetic field
and the potential exists for G2 storm levels.
A coronal hole, high-speed streams,
effect will follow by the 21st of March
and lead to G1 to G2 storm potential on the 21st as well.
A coronal hole is a less dense area of the solar corona.
So the wind escapes from these coronal hole features at high speeds,
known as high-speed streams.
The effects of this solar or geomagnetic storm, not solar storm, should
be minor, mainly manageable effects, some technological infrastructure.
The auroras may become visible over some of the northern
and upper Midwest states, from New York to Idaho.
those wishing to see the aurora borealis should visit
our web page for updates this is our ground
based informational situation it's called
our Kp indexes these are three hour increments and
NOAA and NASA both use the estimated planetary index it's the newest
and most up-to-date it has
us in a G1 geomagnetic storm at a 5.33.
A 5.67 would actually be a G2 geomagnetic storm,
so we're very, very close to that.
And likewise, the Fredericksburg and Boulder indexes both have
us at a G1 geomagnetic storm,
and we're only under a disturbance with our college index.
with that said NOAA has just upped the ante
to a possible G3 geomagnetic storm or Kp7 for tomorrow
you can see here oh it is a 5.67 it's going to be a Kp6
or G2 currently a little bit hard to see
doesn't really look like it on the other map
but we are in G2 geomagnetic storm conditions currently
according to the Estimated Planetary Kp Index here
in the last three hours.
Now, that might move up,
but it's going to continue in storm conditions for sure.
This is our DSCOVR real-time solar wind satellite
that orbits at 1 million miles above Earth
and between Earth and the sun
at Lagrange Point 1.
and it gives us a heads up and a warning
of the the geomagnetic storm i.e plasma and solar winds
are inbound and it looks like well there's some good news
and there's some bad news the bad news
here is our shields have dropped below zero
and red here and that means whatever does hit is going
to hit hard now there's good news here you can see
that the shields are at least tilted in the right
direction and have a northward tilt
so that will help out a bit you can see plasma up here in the
30s going even higher if we catch one right at 40
and there's one higher than that that we weren't
able to catch so just over 40 centimeters cubed
some fairly decent plasma much heavier than they
actually forecast i believe the forecast was for 15
to 20 centimeters cubed and solar winds was
pushed pushed along with the plasma and is up
around 525 uh something close to that temperature
is amazingly normal but it is headed up as well
this usually uh gives us about 30 to 50 minutes
warning depending on how fast the plasma
and solar winds are moving so we know that well we have
additional trouble on the way
and the next bar to drop is going to be at least a g2 maybe a g3
geomagnetic storm get those cameras out
and give me some pictures to world news report today at
gmail.com of that aurora borealis if you happen
to get a clear night where you're at
Thank you for joining us.
Remember, this should continue throughout the evening into tomorrow.
