World News Report Today, March 24th 2026! A significant 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck near Tonga, deeply impacting the region's already active volcanoes and the rising zealandia continent. This natural disaster highlights the ongoing shifts along the pacific plate and the intense forces of plate tectonics at play. Stay informed with World News Report Today!
James Kaufman will report today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we've had a 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Tonga associated with Zealandia,
the continent rising,
our eighth continent rising out of the ocean, and this is where
all of our plate boundaries are going haywire.
We do have a lot of active volcanoes in the area.
It did come in only as a 5 on the DYFI, a 5 on the ShakeMap.
map no people in the immediate area look at the depth
of that 229.5 kilometers when do y'all see
how many atomic bombs worth of energy it released unbelievable
this was a strong earthquake
over to volcanoesandearthquakes.com first off we can see
that we have three volcanoes
right on this area so magma is definitely moving it's
a subduction zone here and these are all
plate tectonic boundaries this is also plate tectonic
boundary I don't know why they don't have it marked
get some additional information on this bad boy usgs
is the main source of data here at 7.5
when do y'all see how strong this thing was uh we
also have Raspberry Shake coming at 7.1
and Germany coming in at 7.5.
Let's go get some additional details
so you can see what we're talking about here.
This is something to remember.
We've had a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
Not very strong, but major.
It's going to be near Tofu Island.
It's going to be near Tonga as well.
It's going to be part of Zealandia,
the continent rising out of the ground.
I've been over that quite a few times, if you're new to the channel,
stick around, we'll teach you as we go.
This was about two hours ago, while this first came in as a 7.6,
even stronger than I thought.
What do you see, how many atomic bombs worth
of energy was associated with this blast?
Now, the USGS is back to reporting as a 7.5, not 7.6,
and it looks like only seven reports have come in from people
that felt it in the middle of nowhere near this volcano home reef.
look at this unbelievable 167.6
atomic bombs for the energy
released for this quake 167.6
atomic bombs for the energy released for this quake
this is a major earthquake and it was
very very deep as well they have it
at 229 kilometers of depth uh this area has been
very very active over the last couple of days
as you all see now they're claiming no aftershocks
but there's been several thus far
and we'll jump up here to the top usgs coming in at 7.5
229 kilometers of depth there we have raspberry
shake coming at 7.1 234 kilometers of depth
we have germany coming in at 7.5 235 kilometers of depth
but the french coming at 7.01 plus or
minus 0.15 so the 7.2 bunch of guys coming in at 189
kilometers we have the incorporated research
Institute for Seismology
coming in at 7.5
229 kilometers
seems to be the consensus
Australia
coming in at 7.51
we did notice coming in
at 7.6
to start with
that's the story
it's been downgraded thus far
7.3 according to
the Italians here
and that's at 215 kilometers
of depth
and the europeans say a seven six europeans want it
to be big i guess it was much bigger
than you let us know again that's
your europeans we'll do a quick summary on this
now here we are we'll take a look
at Zealandia rising bigger than that this is continent you
can see rising here with new zealand
and new caledonia here and get the peaks and they're
both fighting for all of this land coming up from the sea
which would be our eighth continent
or when it comes up it'll be our eighth continent we've had
a bunch of aftershocks here to kind of
give you all an idea it looks like we've had seven total earthquakes
in this area here so that's seven
five and if we go to the largest first
the second largest is just that five two right there
So you'll get an idea of what we're talking about.
I want to show you all this Zealandia Rising,
for those of y'all that are new to my channel.
Actually, New Zealand has an argument
with the United Nations to try to claim as much
as this area as their continental shelf,
although they're not a continent as possible.
We'll see how that goes, but hopefully not well.
Real quickly for the new folks that might have joined us,
we have Zealandia here, which is the eighth continent rising up out
of the ocean, and they're trying to claim the purple marking
as their continental shelf here in the UN statement,
but obviously New Caledonia doesn't want that to happen.
other country right here Tonga, Fiji,
etc this continent looks like it goes clear
over here this is gonna be Australia
this is gonna be a very small Strait
that would be very shallow might have to be dredged
and that goes right into
Papua New Guinea
which I believe might be outside of this boundary it's all gonna
depending on where these plate boundaries fall.
Again, New Zealand's trying to make a quick move
on this continental shelf area here.
Shallows point.
The problem is it takes up New Caledonia.
So I don't think that's going to work out.
Again, this is Australia right here.
And this is really, really the reason
why you have such great surf
on the east coast of Australia.
Because there is something under there
making that surface rise.
I know y'all get it.
I want to make sure everyone knew what Zealandia is.
It goes up to Tonga over here, New Caledonia over here,
New Caledonia over here, Zealandia over here, and Papua
New Guinea on the top, northern, northern, western corner.
That said, God bless, share, subscribe,
always remember, and in the impossible, bizarro world.
