And faucets are now running again tonight
in Stonecrest, at least for now.
That's after two separate water main breaks interrupted service
in the same exact spot in less than a week.
Fox 5's Hernan Gutierrez is live
at the DeKalb County Watershed Department tonight.
Hernan, what did the officials there have to say about all of this?
Yeah, well, they said and confirmed that the fix
to that water main break was repaired at about 3:15 this afternoon.
It comes after two days, Wednesday and Thursday, of water
interruptions earlier this week and people being without water there.
I spoke to one neighbor who said people were lining up around the block
to get cases of water that the county was distributing earlier today.
She feels that this problem is becoming very repetitive.
It's been a disaster even before this week.
A broken water main break throwing a wrench
into weekend plans for people living in South DeKalb County,
including Jasmine Maps, who used to work for the watershed department.
She says they had at least four others this summer alone.
This is not a priority because it is considered South DeKalb.
If this was North DeKalb, I know for a fact this would be top priority.
The latest break leaving neighbors without running water
for at least 12 hours, according to Maps.
She helped deliver water to those in need.
I'm here to fight for my neighbors. A lot of them are elderly.
and they are on their own.
The break happened a neighborhood over.
Crews were still cleaning it up near Ottawa Trail
and Rock Springs Road Sunday afternoon.
Despite a fix, some neighbors still had issues
with water pressure around dinnertime.
I was cooking chicken and waffles.
I was in the kitchen.
Next thing you know, sink going on behind me.
Crews repaired a similar issue at the same spot earlier this week,
bringing headaches before work and school.
The water has been dirty, coming out dirty.
making the noise and stuff and toilet won't flush.
Map says lived in the neighborhood for
eight years and wants those in charge to address the issues.
She's encouraging others to speak out
at county meetings. These people are not hired in positions.
You vote them in position. So if
things are not right, it's your choice to get them out the door.
Now, discolored water is pretty
common after a water main break gets fixed.
Officials here in DeKalb County say not to worry.
They also just recommend that you open those faucets
and let it run for a bit before using it.
Reporting in Stone Mountain, Hernan Gutierrez, Fox 5 News.
Hernan, what a frustrating situation
for all those people, I'm sure, just trying
to cook some dinner on Sunday night. Thank you so
much for the latest on that.
