From the sand to the shoreline, volunteers across Sarasota County
are spending their Saturday morning helping clean up the coast.
Everybody loves our beaches. They come here for our beaches.
So we make an effort to clean them up and help keep them nice.
The effort is part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup,
a worldwide event led by the Ocean Conservatory.
Here in Siesta Key, Keep Sarasota County Beautiful is hosting cleanups
at 22 different sites with more than 500 people volunteering.
I think there's about 40 volunteers here at the north side.
So they're going out to the beaches, the parking lot, the roads,
and just looking for any trash that they find and collecting cans,
little cigarette butts, bottle caps, that kind of stuff.
Keeping trash from making its way
into the water in the surrounding environment.
The most unusual thing is probably a sock and a razor,
but a lot of food trash,
unfortunately, cigarette butts
because they're not allowed here, but they were found.
Yeah, and mostly food kind of trash.
You get a big gulp cup and lotion for suntan lotion bottles.
You got the Crocs, the big gulp.
I mean, my goodness, you got all sorts of stuff.
Did you find anything unique? What'd you find?
Bottle caps and a lot of cigarette butts.
Organizers say it's keeping the beaches clean.
That's what matters most.
And the impact goes beyond what's just collected in a few hours.
And we just want to make sure it's as beautiful as it can be.
