It is a residential area and, you know,
there's probably small kids around here and it's just, it's sad.
A terrifying wake-up call as shots rang out early
this morning in a Northgate neighborhood.
The car that may be connected to the barrage of bullets.
...and cooler temperatures across western Washington,
but staying mostly dry.
Ilona McCauley has a look at what to expect for Sunday.
And the Kraken look to build on their hot start to the season.
We'll have a live report as the team takes
a shot at a tie for first place tonight.
We begin with breaking news.
A 16-year-old is dead after
a collision sent one vehicle onto a sidewalk in Federal Way.
Police say it happened just before 11 last night
at the intersection of South 304th Street and Pacific Highway,
just a block away from Federal Way High School.
Two cars reportedly collided.
Then following that initial crash,
a car left the road and struck the 16-year-old,
who witnesses say was a football player at the school.
Police and firefighters tried to save him, but he died at the scene.
One of the drivers in the accident
was suspected of driving under the influence
and was arrested for vehicular homicide.
Police in Auburn, meanwhile, say impairment may have
been a factor in another deadly crash early Saturday.
It happened near 112th Avenue Southeast in Southeast 316th Place.
Auburn PD says one person was killed
and two others were seriously hurt in the crash.
Detectives are still trying to piece together what happened
to determine if any charges will be filed.
Gunfire erupted in a Northgate neighborhood,
leaving behind more than 80 shell casings and damaged property.
FOX 13's Shira Matsuzawa walks us through what happened
as Seattle police investigate.
It's quiet out here right now, but neighbors tell me earlier
this morning they woke up to gunfire outside of their doors.
And some of them are still shaken.
A bullet hole in this van.
A reminder of what happened just hours earlier.
I heard like 80 gunshots,
and I thought it was gonna stop, but it didn't stop.
Vanessa Leach lives nearby and called police.
Yeah, I thought they were gonna come in my house.
Like, I thought they were trying
to come through my window, and I'm so scared.
At around 8.15 Saturday morning,
Seattle police say they got 911 calls about shots fired.
When officers arrived, they found more than 80 shell
casings consisting of five different calibers.
They say several cars and homes in the area were hit.
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but police say several bullets flew
into the window of one home, nearly hitting one woman.
A very scary situation for people because it's like,
this is our home and it's happening right outside our door.
This woman did not want to be identified,
but she's grateful no one in her family or her friends were hurt.
Because bullets don't have names,
you could be caught in the crossfires.
Police say witnesses reported seeing
a black sedan leave the scene on 107th
and turn north onto Aurora Avenue using the real-time crime center.
Officers found a black sedan with what appeared
to be substantial bullet damage but could not find the car.
We have a lot of gun violence going on right now.
Saturday, shooting comes as the area continues
to be plagued by violence.
Last month, neighbors shared their frustrations
to Mayor Katie Wilson during a community meeting.
I really just hope that these people understand
the damage that they do.

A teenager is in custody after allegedly threatening to commit violence
at a high school football game last night in Tumwater.
It was the second of two games in Thurston County
that were canceled Friday night because of the threat of violence.
Fox 13's Sam Campbell is in Tumwater with more.
At Tumwater High School football field, cheers fill the stands.

and fans to stay home elementary school
teams returned to the field saturday morning
while a 14 year old remained in custody with
Thurston County Youth and Family Services facing real consequences
for alleged behavior in the
digital world police say that teen posted a threat
on social media friday afternoon and soon went on
the run it took police six to seven hours to find
that teen with tumwater police updating the
community on Facebook around 1 a.m. A family member helping
a school resource officer to track
them down. The threat was credible enough
that Tumwater School District called off its rivalry
game kickoff in the Pioneer Bowl with Black Hill High School set
for 7 p.m. but instead players and
fans stayed home. A little leery
but you know I guess it's everywhere you can't just stop. It's
kind of scary because you know not only do we have
to like teach them about football and everything
but we have to teach them about this kind of stuff now too.
And just a 20-minute drive away another
threat canceled the match between Centralia
and Rochester High Schools. The Thurston County
Sheriff says this one was aimed at one student in particular
and is gang related. No arrest there
yet. When I grew up if you had a beef
with someone you literally you went out there you either got
you're fucked or you kicked their fucked but at the end
of the day you help them up and you may not be
friends but it's done it's over with one suspect still outstanding
and half the season left to play

Across the region with readings in
the 50s. But Fox 13 meteorologist Alana McCauley says October has
been a lot warmer and drier than
usual. Well, there's been no doubt about it.
This October so far has been incredibly warm
and incredibly dry. In fact,
you can see really October so far with those temperatures well above
60, even into the 70s. And we've been tracking very little rain.
We've only had less than a
tenth of an inch of rainfall since the beginning of the month,
when typically during an October
we get around just under four inches
so as of right now this does look like it is the third
driest start to the month after 81 years
of keeping records dating back to 1945 but things
are changing we are tracking that increasing chance
for some showers with that cold front
that's already moving on shore best chances
for rain will be overnight tonight into early Sunday
morning. Overnight temperatures will be cool.
We'll be right around 43 degrees in Seattle,
39 degrees in Bremerton.
Temperatures will be chilly once you get off to the south there in
parts of Olympia and Centralia.
Coming up, we'll have a look at that Seahawks forecast as well as
the extended forecast coming up.
The Seattle Kraken are riding a two-game win streak and are
off to a historic start this season.
Tonight, Seattle hosts the Minnesota Wild at Climate
Pledge Arena for the Kraken's third of four straight home games.
That's where we find Fox
13 sports anchor Lauren Helmbrecht. Lauren.
Well, Frankie, as you alluded to, Seattle is off to its
best start through 11 games. They have seven wins and 15 points.
And a big reason for Seattle's
success so far this season, their goal scoring.
The Kraken are averaging 3.82 goals per game,
which is tied for fourth in the National Hockey League.
Now tonight, Seattle will be without
forward Jared McCann,
he sustained a lower body injury in their Thursday win against the Utah
Mammoth. And in that 5-3 victory, Seattle, well,
they gave up multiple goals in the third period
to ultimately lose a multi-goal lead.
But Seattle was able to overcome that and win back-to-back
games in very similar circumstances.
So earlier today, head coach Lane Lambert was asked about
this historic start to the season
and he pointed out that these close games are something that the
team needs to sort out yeah i think we've done
a pretty good job of uh you know obviously
offensively um i think we've done a good job
of dialing in and and putting pucks in the net
obviously um you know that's
been nice uh defensively i still think we can shore them
some things up
and i think our goaltending uh has been very good for us now as for the
Krakens competition. The Minnesota Wild
have lost their last three
road games, but Seattle is not overlooking
this team. In fact, they
boast the goalie who has
the most total saves in the
NHL, and he's starting in this one
tonight. Puck drop at Climate Pledge
is just under an hour at
7 p.m. Reporting outside
the arena, Lauren Helbrecht, Fox 13
Sports.

The French government says nearly 410,000
people have turned out across the country.
Nearly a quarter of them are flooding the streets of Paris.
The rallies are centered on the cost of living and school funding.
Authorities say more than 1,000 people have been arrested.

Emotions are still high nine days after
a shooting at a school in Bend, Oregon.
A father with two little girls
who attend Silver Rail Elementary did the unimaginable.
He followed the gunman before firing
the fatal shot that ended the violence.
I called her and I was like, Mom,
I just had to take the life of what I think might be a child.
Caleb Giamonco says the first thing he did after stopping
the bloodshed at a Bend,
Oregon elementary school last Thursday was call his mother.
The 36-year-old Carpenter was
emotional recalling the crucial minutes before he ended
the October 15th shooting rampage.
I started hearing children pleading for their lives
and then I started hearing gunfire
and I just started army crawling faster
and faster and I told myself this is probably the
the last thing that I'm ever going to do.
The shooter, identified as a former Silver
Rail student, killed three children, ages 5,
8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher.
A second teacher and a child
in a wheelchair were injured by the gunfire
before Giamonco used
a legally owned .40 caliber pistol to stop the gunman.
I found my opportunity and I seen a teacher
on the left struggling with the gunman on the right
with the rifle and I knew that they were they were both side to me
and I knew that he did not
know that I was there and so at that point I swung the door out
and open and I stepped in and I fired
Bend Police say Giamonco's selfless intervention
and that of another Silver Rail teacher
likely saved countless lives you know I don't
think we can underestimate or underappreciate
that courage. When someone is willing to risk
their own life for others, we recognize that.
And the quick thinking to observe,
to then park and follow someone into the school
is incredible. As for the school community,
the district has arranged for extra counselors and
a strong police presence across the district.
But administrators say it will take time to move
forward. While most students in Bend have returned to the classroom,
Silver Rail will be closed
until further notice.
Police continue to call the shooting an active investigation. Among the
questions detectives hope to answer,
where the shooter obtained the gun and a trove of ammunition
used in the shooting.
Frustrated parents in Olympia are fighting to stop a proposal that
would close and consolidate schools.
The district is one of many around the region grappling with
declining enrollment and budget deficits.
Fox 13 spoke with one parent as she was dropping off her student.
It feels like an erosion of public trust because we elected
the school board members into this position to represent us.
The parents and the community members really are ready to partner with
the school board rather than have it be adversarial.
We really want to partner together to keep these schools open and
help think of creative solutions dozens of parents spoke
at the school board meeting Thursday night
most of them against these closures
the proposal would close McKinney Elementary along with Madison
and Elpreet Brown elementary schools
the superintendent for the Olympia School District
says closures are necessary due to budget issues
and declining enrollment the final vote on the
proposal is scheduled for November 12th driving

Federal Way will soon land you a speeding ticket outside of school hours.
The city says four speed
enforcement cameras will start ticketing drivers 24 hours a day.
That includes two cameras near
the Saghali Technology School and one on Southwest Campus Drive,
another on 21st Avenue Southwest
near the school and a Fred Meyer.
The third camera is right in front of Panther Lake Elementary
school on First Way South
and the other camera is on Southwest 320th Street in front of Twin
Lakes Elementary. A 30-day warning period will
begin November 1st. Violations will begin December
1st. Heads up for drivers in Seattle
the Spokane Street Swing Bridge will be closed this weekend
for maintenance. SDOT says it will be replacing
the center lock. Bicyclists and pedestrians will
still be able to use the bridge.
The bridge closure started this morning at 7 a.m. and will
last until the bridge reopens Monday morning at 4
a.m. Drivers can use the West Seattle High-Rise
Bridge instead. The World Series is underway between
the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays,
but as FOX 13's Lauren Donovan has learned,
there's a piece of history some local fans here
may not realize. Before they were Brewers and called Milwaukee home,
they were the Seattle
Pilots. After just one season in 1969, bankruptcy, a big move
and a legal battle left Seattle without
its team. It was so slapdash
and happened
so quickly that the the truck
with all the pilots
equipment was in Provo, Utah
and they're waiting for a call to see if they should go northeast
to Milwaukee or northwest
to Seattle. Just five days before opening day in 1970, Seattle lost its
ball club, so they didn't even have uniforms. They had
the old Pilots uniforms. They stripped off
Seattle, they stripped off Pilots, they put Milwaukee
and put Brewers, so the first year
they were wearing Pilots jerseys. Local baseball
historian Dave Eskenazi has collected pieces of
that short-lived season. He says the Brewers blue
and gold we see on the diamond today
goes back to their Seattle roots
and on Rainier Avenue there's another reminder the Lowe's now
stands where Six Stadium once did.
At the time it was built, it was the finest
in the country. But 30 years later,
it was a little bit ramshackle and wasn't suitable
for Major League Baseball. Seattle agreed to fix up Six Stadium and
eventually build a new ballpark altogether.
It happened so fast. They were still in spring
training as the Pilots.
The team had declared bankruptcy in September of 1969, but they
tried to keep the team here.
Civic leaders fought to keep the team. They
even took the American League to court.
In fact, them suing the American League for
breach of trust and breach of contract
is what brought the Mariners here seven years later.
If not for that happening, we might
not have had another Major League Baseball team.
Dave says losing the Pilots hurt,
much like losing the Sonics years later.
Even still, this World Series, he's jumping on the Brewers bandwagon.
It's been 57 years, and we've had a major league team for 50 years,
so maybe the first time the Brewers went to the World Series in 1982,
it was still kind of fresh 12 years later, and there's a lot of anger
and vitriol, but I think it's time to let that go.

Disney on Ice has skated back into the Puget Sound area.
The latest show is called Jump In,
featuring over 50 Disney beloved characters.
Performances run through the weekend at the Showwear Center in Kent.
FOX 13 got a backstage performance based on the movie Inside Out.
If I touch it, it will tell me my emotions.
Yes.
Touch it.
Oh, my goodness.
Is that?
Joy.
It's joy.
Oh, good.
I have joy.
Of course I do.
I'm Disney on Ice.
I'm on the ice.
If you can't make it to Kent this weekend,
Disney on Ice will be at the Angel of the Winds Arena
in Everett from October 29th to November 1st.
The U.S. Secret Service ramped up
an operation around Seattle this past week
on the hunt for skimming devices across the Puget Sound area.
Secret Service agents visited 217 businesses,
more than 400 credit card or debit card terminals,
100 ATMs and 300 gas pumps.
They were looking for card readers that take
and hold information from cards.
They say as technology improves,
skimming devices are more difficult to detect
while their use has increased
in the past two years on bank cards and EBT cards.
The Secret Service says in the last year alone,
operations like this removed more than 400 illegal skimming devices,
preventing an estimated loss of $428 million.
We'll be right back.
special well hi there everyone
from the Fox 13 weather center I'm meteorologist Ilona McCauley
some changes finally beginning to take place
as we're increasing those chances for showers
beginning late tonight and in fact we're going
to keep the rainfall chances going uh through much
of the work week as of right now it does look like
a drier Halloween is in store for us by
next Saturday big game on Sunday out
at Lumen Field uh you might want to bundle up though
temperatures are going to be only in the 50s throughout
the much of the game stray shower
possible I do think that most of the game will be more dry than wet
but we'll have a few showers
around in fact as we time it out
on that future cast here's that increasing chance for rain
beginning late tonight with that cold front coming through
and the hours are for the best
chances for rain will be late tonight
into early tomorrow morning but you can see i pause this
right around 5 30 tomorrow that's really close to kickoff time
and we've got mostly cloudy skies but
we do have a few showers in the area
that's why i'm just keeping that stray shower possible
off to the east there we do have the chances
for some snow flurries up around the higher
elevations as the snow levels will be coming down
to right around four to five thousand feet
a stray shower possible holding into early monday morning
but after that drying out ever so slightly
we do have some pretty good rainfall totals possible
in fact over an inch will be possible
in areas around the olympic peninsula highs
on sunday very close to where we've seen them for
the last couple of days low 50s up around everett we've got 57 degrees
in seattle 55 in olympia
and that seven-day forecast will show we're going
to hold steady in those 50s for much of the week
as we talked about kind of an unsettled week ahead
for us as we've got additional chances
for some showers all the way through Thursday.
Thanks for joining us for Seattle News Tonight.
