A teenager is in police custody after allegedly threatening
a high school football game in
Tumwater. Fox 13's Sam Campbell live outside Tumwater High School.
Sam, what's the latest on this?
Well, Taylor, good morning.
We are actually on the football field right now where a new day has
started. There are little kids about to begin
their own football practice, but as you can see
over my shoulder here, the stands still empty,
yet parents starting to fill in and watch their
children. It was a completely different scene yesterday.
The 14 year old that we were mentioning
is now in custody with Thurston County Youth
and Family Services facing real consequences
for alleged behavior in the digital world
that ultimately had impacts right here on this field.
Police say they posted a threat on social media yesterday afternoon
and soon went on the run.
It took police six to seven hours to find the teen
with Tumwater Police updating the community
on Facebook around 1 a.m. that they'd found the suspect,
a family member helping a school
resource officer to track them down.
The threat was credible enough that Tumwater School District
had called off its rivalry game.
Kickoff in the Pioneer Bowl with Black Hill High School was set
for 7 p.m., but instead, players, parents,
and fans were told to stay home. Now, Tumwater police do
not expect to make any further arrests in this case,
but we are learning about another incident
where a Thurston County football match was called off.
The sheriff says that that was a threat that was gang-related
and targeted at a specific student.
Now, we have reached out to the sheriff's office
to ask if these two incidents are related,
but right now there's no evidence of that.
