A member of the Russian elite helped Ukrainian intelligence gather information on Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov before his assassination in Moscow. The Russian, using the pseudonym Foma, leads a network of volunteers from Warsaw and maintains ties to sources within the Russian intelligence services, the BBC reports. Sarvarov headed the operational training department of the Russian General Staff. He died on December 22, 2025, in a car bombing in Moscow. After the assassination, Foma wrote to one of the film's creators: "I'll say it was quite a chore to keep track of him. He lived alternately with his mistress and a colleague. He covered his tracks and constantly changed his schedule." The film's second protagonist, a Russian named Ivan, spoke about reconnaissance of military installations and the preparation of caches within Russia. According to the BBC, more than a year before Operation Spiderweb, he warned a journalist about preparations for a similar attack, without specifying specific targets or timing. The GUR confirmed that it is cooperating with both of the film's heroes. Foma told the BBC about a network of approximately three dozen people in Russia, Ukraine, and several European countries. Some monitor Russian military personnel, others gather intelligence and provide technical support. The group is not directly involved in assassinations. According to the BBC, in early 2022, Foma warned the Main Intelligence Directorate of preparations for a full-scale invasion. Ukrainian intelligence agencies subsequently helped him leave Russia and settle in Poland. In conversations, he mentions contacts with both Ukrainian intelligence and FSB officers, whom he refers to as "office personnel." Among the capabilities of his network, Foma also cited access to Russian officials' Telegram correspondence. The "Agency" discovered a possible connection between the film's protagonist and the Volya publication: several shots show a donation page for this project open on his monitor. Since September, an anonymous military commentator with the same pseudonym has regularly appeared on Alexander Plushchev's The Breakfast Show, where he is introduced as the co-founder of the Volya channel. Plushchev explained that he invited Foma when he was looking for a replacement for military expert Yuri Fedorov. He had previously known him from Georgian political scientist Gela Vasadze's reviews and his Telegram channel.
