Can ₹2.5 crore be enough to retire in India?

Hemant Joshi retired at the age of 54 after spending 32 years in corporate life. At retirement, he had built a corpus of ₹2.5 crore.

8 years later, after funding his monthly expenses from that retirement corpus, his portfolio today stands at around ₹3.2 crore.

In this episode, Hemant explains how he planned his retirement, decided his target corpus, structured his investments using a bucket strategy and managed life without a monthly salary.

But everything didn’t go perfectly.
During the COVID market crash, fear took over and he sold his equity mutual funds close to the market bottom. His corpus fell from around ₹2.5 crore to ₹2.3 crore. He later started moving money back into equities during market corrections.

Today, at 62, he says his retirement plan is still on track.

In this conversation, we cover:
Why he decided to retire at 54
How he went from a ₹1,450/month salary to ₹2.5 lakh/month
Why he targeted ₹2.5 crore for retirement
How the bucket strategy works in retirement
How he planned monthly income after quitting his job
His biggest investing mistake during COVID
How his retirement corpus recovered to ₹3.2 crore
How his expenses increased from ₹70–75K to nearly ₹1 lakh/month

His current retirement portfolio across bonds, FDs, annuity, equity, gold, debt funds and PPF
What 8 years of retirement taught him about money and financial freedom
For Hemant, retirement is not about constantly finding something productive to do.

Sometimes, financial freedom simply means having the choice to travel, read, meet friends on a weekday afternoon or do nothing at all.

If you are thinking about retirement planning in India, early retirement, building a retirement corpus, financial independence, FIRE, retirement investing or life after retirement, this episode gives you a real world example of what retirement can actually look like after 8 years.
