HMS Victory 1:84 – Lower Gun Deck & Copper Hull | Part 03

⚓ Welcome back to Part 03 of my HMS Victory build series!

In this episode, we continue our journey through the legendary HMS Victory, building the stunning 1:84 scale wooden ship model by Artesania Latina.

After completing the Orlop Deck and its interior lighting in Part 02, it's time to move up to the Lower Gun Deck, bringing another fascinating section of this historic warship to life.

This chapter combines traditional wooden ship modelling with 3D design, resin printing, precision metalwork and custom-made tools.

And there's a major milestone: the hull receives its beautiful copper sheathing!

⚓ Building the Lower Gun Deck

The lower gun deck is one of the most fascinating sections of HMS Victory.

In this episode, I work on the gun ports, interior details, support pillars and the installation of 30 cannons.

The cast-metal cannon barrels are carefully cleaned, filed and polished using the MetMo Fractal Vise before receiving a blackening treatment to achieve a realistic metal appearance.

The cannons are then fitted with their rigging, including individually formed rope coils.

To complete the deck structure, I design and resin-print new support pillars, just as I did for the Orlop Deck. Small steel pins provide additional stability during installation.

🔨 Hull Planking & Copper Sheathing

Another major part of this episode is the wooden hull planking and the application of copper sheathing below the waterline.

Instead of using individual copper plates, I developed my own 3D-printed embossing roller in Blender.

This custom tool transforms 5 mm self-adhesive copper tape into a continuous pattern of miniature copper plates, complete with simulated plate joints and tiny nail impressions.

The result is a beautifully detailed copper-covered hull that captures the characteristic appearance of HMS Victory's historic underwater protection.

From digital design in Blender to resin printing and finally applying the copper tape – this is where modern technology meets traditional ship modelling!

⚓ Installing the Rudder

The episode concludes with the preparation and installation of the rudder and its fittings.

Carefully shaped metal hinges and soldered brass pins help recreate the functional appearance of the original rudder assembly.

Another important construction stage is complete!

🛠️ Needful Tools

MetMo Fractal Vise

A beautifully engineered precision vise that I use to hold and work on small metal components, especially the cast-metal cannon barrels.

Its secure grip makes filing, polishing and detailed metalwork much easier.

Custom 3D-Printed Copper Embossing Roller

Designed by me in Blender and resin-printed specifically for this HMS Victory project. It creates the plate divisions and simulated nail patterns on 5 mm self-adhesive copper tape.

Additional tools and techniques include precision files, miniature hand drills, an ultrasonic cutter, soldering equipment and resin 3D printing.

🎬 About This Series

This HMS Victory project is more than just assembling a wooden ship kit.

My goal is to combine traditional craftsmanship, historical inspiration, 3D modelling, custom-made details and cinematic filmmaking to bring this legendary vessel to life.

One side of the model remains open, allowing the detailed interior decks and structures to be admired even after completion.

As always, I try to make the construction process as entertaining and visually engaging as possible.
