Now to this, a Detroit mother
is seeking justice tonight for her young autistic son.
She says he was assaulted at school and wants a teacher's aid removed.
Fox 2's Lauren Edwards joins us live
in Detroit with the latest on this story.
Lauren, what happened?
Ruth, we spoke with the mother just
a few short hours ago, and she is on a mission.
All she wants is for her child to be safe at school,
but says recently he came home
and was traumatized.
Let's get into the details and everything you need to know.
Now, her name is Chyna Hocking and says back on October 5th,
her eight-year-old son, who
has autism was dropped off at Priest Elementary around 9:54
a.m. minutes later she says parents
were called and told to pick him up
because he was kicking now later that night she received a
phone call from the school principal
and officials saying that her son quote might have been kicked
two days later she went up to the school
and says she was told that he was in fact
kicked she filed a police report
and also asked to see the security video of the incident but
that didn't happen until the following day.
Hocking says she saw that video and it was much
more than just a kick.
Hocking says there was grabbing and hitting by the teacher's aid and
she says immediately when she saw the video she broke down in tears.
Cried. I cried. I cried. I
walked out the school at all. Everybody I went
to Western to view it because they had to they had to
be at a school to hook it up and view it.
I was dropping my son. I remember him telling me when
I was coming out the office I was just I couldn't even talk I said go
to class go to class I'm just
everybody's just looking at me he's like okay mom like go
to class go to class I was in the
parking lot crying I have teenagers coming
to my door what's wrong opening my door hugging me
asking me what's wrong because I just seen
my child get abused by somebody who was supposed
to protect him. Now Fox 2 reached out
to Detroit Public Schools District and they say that an
investigation has been launched
and that the employee was removed and will not be returning
to Priest Elementary the statement goes
on to say quote federal privacy laws and personnel
confidentiality requirements limit what we can share publicly
however we are committed
to addressing concerns through appropriate
district procedures working collaboratively
with families and protecting the rights
of every student now to read that full statement you could
head to fox2detroit.com but Hocking says that she did put
in a freedom of information act to obtain
a copy of that video but she simply just wants answers
and wants to know why that aid wasn't
removed much much sooner again we're going to get
into all that too coming up on the edge for now
reporting live here in Detroit, Lauren Edwards, Fox
2 News. Yeah, Lauren, any idea in this particular
incident how long it took for this uh alleged uh you know beating
of or the pulling and the
pushing and the kicking when did it end was it
a few minutes was it longer than that it appears to
be a few minutes because she says that the dad dropped him off at 9 54
and then they were called
I would say around 10:08 to come and pick him up
so something happened between that short time and
that's where a lot of this lies
is what happened how would happen what got started but also who
knew what when and these are all questions
that she's asking questions that we're asking as well
yeah who may have intercepted this whole thing
and stopped it from continuing we'll have to wait I
guess for the video for that Freedom
of Information Act, our Lauren Edwards for us
live tonight. Lauren, thank you.
