This report analyzes a significant seismic event in the Philippines, ranging from magnitude 6.3 to 6.6 depending on the reporting agency. The event occurred in a highly active region characterized by plate tectonic boundaries and multiple active volcanoes, suggesting that magma movement played a role in the activity.
James Coughlin, World News Report today.
We finally had a decent-sized earthquake over the Philippines.
I think we just had another shock down here in New Zealand, not as big.
5.2, Auckland Island, New Zealand region.
We did, in fact, have a 6.3,
came in at least a 6.4 here in the Philippines,
a six on the DWFI, a seven on the ShakeMap
and they have it at default depth of 10 kilometers
this is right in the middle of a bunch
of faults that are trying to reform or form
and right there where we have five
or six volcanoes erupting with magma under them so
So what you're seeing here
is magma movement under the active volcanoes.
It's a simple situation.
Once you get a little closer, you can actually see for that 6.3,
we've had a 5.7 and a 5.2 right there.
So it's been very, very busy.
You can see all the active volcanoes to the north and to the south.
You can actually see the plate that is broken up.
When you see the plate in the black,
That's where they think it's going to actually occur in blue.
Well, it's already starting to occur at that placement.
We're going to go for the 6.3.
Get some additional information on that 6.3.
USGS is the main source here.
It's the 6.4.
Like I told you all, this was just downgraded.
A 6.4 by the Germans.
a 6.4 by Raspberry Shack.
There was a 6.4 by the USGS as well,
and they all came in, well, actually Germany came in at 18 kilometers,
and Raspberry Shack
and the USGS came in at a default depth of 10 kilometers.
Moving over to volcano discovery from earthquakesandvolcanoes.com,
we see that we have a 6-3 here,
I'm guessing the USGS is the source that's been downgraded.
It happened about three hours ago.
We have our earthquake details coming in at 6-3,
default depth 10 kilometers.
USGS, 54 reports thus far.
I'm guessing we're going to see a lot more.
I want to point out 2.7 atomic bombs worth
of energy were released with this blast.
so it was nothing to play around
with all right here we have our latest shake map it says 50
shake reports i'm looking at 64 above it 64 shake reports
and it takes a lot for someone to call in
and put a report in especially in the philippines
the 6.3 that's offshore right but we do see that
A lot of folks thought it was fairly strong in the yellow range.
Most of them thought it was moderate in the blue range.
But a good-sized earthquake for the Philippines,
especially right there in the middle of seven
or eight active volcanoes,
magma movement, and on a volcanic ridge range,
and on a plate tectonic boundary.
wow can you get any more active than that all right
this quake was much stronger than the
usgs is reporting as you can see here
that to compare the quake from different reporting
agencies usgs 6-3 germany at 6-4-4
Indonesia a 6.6 raspberry shake
a 6.4 of course the French
down in a 5.9.
6.6
coming out of Australia.
I tend to go with Australia all the time.
The Europeans a 6.3
and
probably the Italians a 6.4.
All of these have depth
35 kilometers,
41 kilometers, 30 kilometers
default depth.
So it was a big quake.
Probably a lot bigger than what
they're letting us know.
Get ready.
We're going to have one on the West Coast almost any day now.
Almost any day now.
As according to the United States Geological
Survey's actual geologist, they said it is go time.
I decided this was a great time to teach you guys
the difference between what a seismogram looks like
with an earthquake versus an atomic bomb or a conventional bomb.
Now, always with a conventional or atomic bomb,
the first wave or two are going to be the highest.
Here, we see that they're not.
We see that waves after that, here, actually outlined in red for you.
The peak of the quake is always outlined in red on this.
It happened a few minutes into the quake.
If this would have been a man-made situation,
the red line would be in front here.
It'd be the first line or two.
And that would be an atomic bomb or conventional bomb that went off.
And, well, this comes in all formats.
But remember, if the first line's not the biggest line,
it's an actual earthquake.
If the first line is the biggest and longest line,
it's a man-made situation, period.
So, since this was a big quake,
I went to the National Data Buoy Association,
and there's no buoys in event mode.
There was no tsunami created from this earthquake, and it was offshore.
It was only a 6-3, 6-4, 6-6,
I don't know who you asked, and, well,
we'll call it a moderate earthquake at this point.
But compared to anything happening on the U.S. West Coast, it was huge.
If something like this ever occurs on the U.S. West Coast,
it's going to be a complete game over.
So that 6-3 or 6-6, if you believe Australia, well,
it was probably much stronger than the USGS is letting on to.
We had another strong quake just now south there at 5-2.
and
from 105.7
it's almost on top
of that 6.3
we would almost call it a swarm
and I'm guessing if we put on
all of the earthquakes in that area
it would definitely become a swarm
with that said, God bless you guys
