A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit 38 km (24 mi) away from Cartago, Departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia, in the morning of Monday, Aug 10, 2026 at 7.34 am local time (America/Bogota GMT -5). The quake had a moderate depth of 110 km (69 mi) and was felt over a large region.
James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we've had a major 7.4 magnitude earthquake down in Colombia,
just west of two active volcanoes,
basically on a plate tectonic boundary
that is still in connection or trying to connect.
And this was a very powerful quake.
The USGS says it was at 110.3 kilometers.
I'm sure there's a magma pit under
these volcanoes that are active in the area.
There's two volcanic ridges there as well.
This came in as an 8 on the DYFI,
a 7 on the ShakeMap, and an orange on the Pager.
Several aftershocks,
and we'll see about how many in just one moment here.
Let's get in there and take a look at what's going on.
All right, here we are.
It's a 7.4 for the USGS.
We're going to go ahead and zoom in and take a look at this area.
You can see we have two volcanoes just to the east.
We have Nevado del Ruiz volcano
and Machin Volcano.
We have one volcanic range here and another one right here.
And there's lots of aftershocks.
I'll kind of bring you down the row here.
uh let's see there was a 5.0 and then
when we get into the smaller ones there's a four point
something some 3.0s and stronger
when we hit all of them well it's a swarm right there and it's
right down that volcanic range from Medellin
and there's Bogota all places i know y'all have heard
of obviously the whole west coast here
is a volcanic range it's a lot of volcanoes that
just haven't awakened let's get some detailed
information here here we have a 7.4 110 kilometers
69 miles of depth and that's the USGS they
also have raspberry shake coming in at only a 6.8
And the French coming in at 6.9.
Let's go get some detailed information on this quake.
It says this happened at 7:34 AM,
and that's local time there, August 10th today.
So it's just occurred.
Let's get some more information here.
I don't know if this one's been downgraded or not.
Happened onshore.
Look at all the reports.
Wow.
quite a few of them 755 reports on the first map
that came out we have more than that i'm sure
this is quite a shake map here folks no wonder it came
in as an eight the DYFI this is just one of
the many aftershocks right there on top of the 7.4 we had
that 5.0 as well this one shows that all
All this was happening right on top of this small village,
Santo Domingo de los Tejar.
And this is your volcanic range that runs up and down this area here.
Just one of the small aftershocks happened just
a few moments after the major quake.
So this is still USGS information.
We're up to 1,218 reports.
that'll probably go higher as we move
into the data wow it's a lot of folks involved with this
a 7.4 released 118.7 atomic bombs
of energy unbelievable all right here's
the latest shake
map it's got some intense shaking there's
a central part of the earthquake here it doesn't
report the 1,218 reports, it's still 1,199,
so this was done before the latest and greatest,
but it shows you that this was felt all the way in Caracas,
Venezuela, and up through Costa Rica
and into Nicaragua. Unbelievable,
and we have some very intense shaking, a couple different areas,
So this was a strong one,
118-plus atomic bombs of energy released.
All right, like we always do,
we'll quickly compare data from the different agencies.
The 7.4 USGS, 69 miles in depth.
The 6.8 Raspberry Shake, 62 miles in depth.
Actually, Germany came in at a 7.46, almost a 7.5.
They're also at 64 miles of depth, all about the same.
Next, we have the French coming in at 6.91,
default depth 10 kilometers.
The Australians came in at 7.6.
Wow, folks, 67 miles deep, right where everyone thinks it popped off.
And then, believe it or not, the Italians came in at 7.7.
This was a much stronger quake.
I wonder if the USGS came in with a stronger quake
and then downgraded it before I got to see it.
Let me know in the comments if y'all saw it come in stronger.
We have the Europeans come in at 7.4, 68 miles.
Also, and we have, it looks like the Brazilian
government come in at 7.4, also at 68 miles of depth.
Wow.
Now, I wanted to remind y'all we had the other 7-4 last week
with the planetary alignment right there in Mexico.
And this is basically the Caribbean plate through here.
And, well, we're having another 7-4 right here.
Both these plates are working on connecting, if you will.
And one day they will be clean.
You can see the end of that plate right there.
And the end of this plate ends up on this volcanic bridge
or range here.
So the story of the day, obviously,
is the swarm and the 7.4 magnitude earthquake.
The 118 plus atomic bombs worth of energy released.
You got to say, wow.
We did call this as well.
We said that we might see some quakes.
And I think I said 7.3.
Guess I was off.
We might see some quakes
because of the geomagnetic storm that hit just two days ago.
We're expecting another geomagnetic storm
this evening from two filament eruptions.
Could be a one-two cannibal situation.
Not quite sure if it's going to hit later today
or early tomorrow, but it'll be one
or the two that will also cause problems for us.
That said, God bless, folks. Please share and subscribe,
and always remember, anything's possible. Bizarro world.
