James Koppman, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
while I was putting the other video together on this 6.6, 6.3, perhaps,
and the aftershock, the 5.1,
we had another 6.3 pop off the Kermadec Islands,
just north of New Zealand here.
Extremely, extremely deep, 226.1 kilometers.
came in very light on the DYFI and the ShakeMap
because it was so deep, in fact.
But this is a sizable quake.
It has to do with Zealandia,
the continent that's rising out of the ocean right in this area,
right on that plate tectonic boundary,
also on a volcanic ridge.
The Earth is growing.
All right, here we are.
So we are just north
of Whale Island Volcano.
I know there's another volcano, White Island Volcano, active there.
There's two here in Tonga, Home Reef, and Tofu.
I've got a lot of magma movement here.
I'm going to turn them all on so you can just see how much
magma movement is on that volcanic ridge right there.
This is also a plate tectonic boundary, as you can see here.
Let's get some detailed information about
this particular incident.
All right, we have a very strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake 43 minutes
ago right there off the coast of Zealandia or North of Zealandia.
And that would be, or New Zealand, that would be Zealandia rising.
The continent is rising out of the ocean.
I'll show you a quick picture of that for those of you
that aren't familiar with it.
We'll quickly go with this map, but I believe Zealandia is going
to actually end up all the way up here in Fiji in the Tonga area.
That's New Caledonia here.
It's going to be part of the new continent that's rising.
There's going to be a very small strait between Australia and Zealandia.
And this is why the waves on the East Coast are so awesome.
Well, they're being pushed up, pushed up by this continental shelf
or plate, or this continent that's right under the water.
So not very deep at all.
Zealandia is trying to make a move on the surrounding areas, saying
it's a continental plate, a boundary, but they're not a continent.
So that's kind of hard, right?
And, well, let's take a look at the USGS, the main source here,
a 6.3, very deep, 226 kilometers, coming in at 2.7 atomic bombs worth
of energy, just as the other 6.3 did, so I'll figure it the same way.
The other 6.3 was probably a much stronger earthquake.
Well, I guess we're getting earthquakes
because the geomagnetic storm yesterday charged the plates.
And, well, now they're popping off.
That's how this works.
Planet alignments, charged plates, etc.
Now, I know this quake just occurred,
but we've only gotten, it says four.
We've actually had eight reports thus far.
And you can see the reports are all in New Zealand here,
and none of them looks significant whatsoever.
The quake was quite a bit offshore, but still on that volcanic ridge
and that tectonic plate that you can clearly see in the background.
All right, quickly comparing earthquake data
from different reporting agencies.
The USGS is first up at 6.3,
at 226 kilometers, 140 miles deep.
We have New Zealand coming in at 6.2, 100 kilometers deep.
We've got the Germans coming in at 6.3, 190 kilometers.
We've got Raspberry Shake coming in at 6.3, 189 kilometers.
We have the French coming in at 5.65,
very, very conservative,
161 kilometers.
We have Indonesia coming in at 6.1, 264 kilometers of depth.
The Italians coming in at a 6.2 and 171 kilometers of depth.
The Europeans come in at 6'3", 226 kilometers of depth.
Is that what the U.S. came in?
Yes, they're just matching the U.S. perfectly right.
And lastly, we have the Australians,
who probably have their finger on this thing,
coming in at a 6'3", 193 kilometers in depth.
That's probably the best bet,
even though they have a lot of geophones over there.
And just to show you a little bit more about geophone signatures,
here we can clearly see that the first line,
the red, is not the longest or biggest line.
So this is definitely a natural earthquake.
You can see that it increases in size and then slowly falls off.
Natural earthquake.
If that first line was the strongest line
and everything decreased after that,
you'd be looking at an atomic or conventional blast of some sort.
With that said, a busy night thus far, right?
A busy night thus far. Got a lot
of West Coast action, nothing out of the ordinary.
We have a 6-3 or 6-6 here, and we have
an aftershock 5-1 here, a 5-7 aftershock here.
Now, we just saw within the last hour, the 6.3.
So, two 6.3s for a 6.3 and a 6.6, depending on who you trust.
Honorable mentions here,
it looks like we have a New Madrid quake up here.
It looks fairly sizable for a New Madrid quake.
And it looks like it's coming in at a 2.6,
98 kilometers, like it's right on the New Madrid.
Satellite is not available right now,
it would be a lot easier to tell, but the New Madrid
is right in this area right here, so I'm
not 99% sure this is a New Madrid quake, and
And a fairly sizable one compared to usual, a 2.6, again,
at 9.8 kilometers, which would be about the right depth as well.
And finally, we had a little 4.0 over in Covello,
Covello, up in Northern California,
and across the border of Nevada at 3.2.
Very strange spot there.
well it might not be it might be really close
to this volcanic range ridge that's it god bless you
