AI GeneratedSam Zukan, founder of 5PMNYC, discusses his comprehensive guide to New York City's happy hour scene. By analyzing data from over 100 neighborhoods, Zukan reveals significant price variances across the city and debunks the myth that higher-rated establishments necessarily charge more for drinks, offering a tool for residents and tourists to find high-value spots.
Let's have a little fun because it turns out
that New York's happy hour scene has some serious neighborhood secrets.
We could only think of one man to help us navigate this area.
Sam Zuckin is the guy helping us find the good spots.
He's the founder of 5PMNYC.
It's a guide to happy hours all across the city.
He's released a report breaking down what drinks really cost
in more than 100 New York City neighborhoods.
Sam, I apologize if I pronounced your last name incorrectly.
You can correct me if you need to.
um but welcome to Newsroom Live it
is Zukan surprisingly Zukan okay um and so Sam you
created this website uh and these reports
which we do have some video of we could sort of show
it as we're talking what is this uh
no this is the restaurants this the other one is the other
clip yeah what is this uh the site that you have
and what can we find on it yeah so the site started
off as kind of a passion project i thought it'd
be fun to pull something together so i made 5pm
NYC about eight months ago,
and it's effectively just a happy hour guide. Bars and restaurants
submit their happy hours. I put them on the site.
And in the beginning, it was pretty small,
but it got traction pretty quickly.
And it's very easy to use. You just go on, go to 5pm.nyc,
put in your location, put in where you're going,
and it'll show you all the happy hours nearby,
when they're running, what the deal is.
And I started to accumulate all this data over time.
I was getting all these submissions,
and I was wondering, what can I do with the 100,000
prices that i now have and so i decided
to pull together a report comparing prices deals across
the city and so that's kind of what you've got on the screen now
but it shows you um basically
every type of drink price that i have any way you could cut it
um so i think some of the interesting
takeaways here for starters happy hour saves you
a lot of money the average drink in the city is 16
and during happy hour you're getting 35 to 40 off
at the average establishment on cocktails wine
beer um another pretty interesting thing that came out
of this was the the variance in neighborhoods
i mean you see some spots that are seven
or eight dollars higher than others and i'd say the last
really interesting takeaway is that uh google stars
and price don't correlate so like if a
place is better rated it doesn't on average charge more for a drink
so you know those people that say
they have their local spot that's cheap
and has good drinks they're telling you the truth because
there's no relationship between between how high a place is rated
and how much they charge for a
cocktail and just sort of looking at some
of the numbers i mean as you might imagine it looked like
Manhattan and Brooklyn kind of have some
of the highest average uh happy hour drinks um and uh
Nomad has the highest median cocktail 19.50
um well where is Nomad first of all i don't know why i
can't remember exactly where that is it's in it's
in Manhattan okay in like central Manhattan
Central Manhattan. And then what you said is very interesting
because it's less about the boroughs
and more about the actual neighborhoods.
Where are the good neighborhoods if people are coming
to town and you think they need to find something?
Yeah, I think a good neighborhood is a relative
thing, right? You're going to find
the most expensive neighborhoods in Staten Island
that are less expensive than
the least expensive neighborhoods in South Manhattan.
But I would say Astoria is a cool spot
from a value perspective because I found that
in Astoria they have really really high rated bars
and restaurants that people seem to love
and they're also quite inexpensive
um so that was that was kind of a nice little combo finding
from the piece but there are a lot of cool spots there's Breeze
which you have on the screen which
is a place I love in Greenpoint they have
a great happy hour deal um Kitty Sullivan's in Astoria has
you know five dollar well drinks nine dollar beers
and a shot that's a good spot yeah there
are a lot of good spots around the around the city
if you're uh if you're finding them I really
like the arts also art soho art midtown in manhattan
though you know it's the pricing
spectrum is a little bit um more severe
so you're still going to be spending more than you would
basically anywhere else in the country yeah
but uh you can still get a good a good deal on a good
drink if you find the right spot sam thank you
so much thank you for creating this website if
you're watching from out of town on the fox local app
and you're looking to find a good drink that's
Not a kind of the cliche thing.
I highly suggest going to 5 p.m. NYC,
a guide to happy hours all across the city.
Sam Zukin, thank you very much.
