Former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay has died at the age of 69.
Tina Cervasio is here.
Tina, I've got to just put on that microphone real quick.
So let's see.
New York Rangers putting out a statement.
They say the Rangers organization mourns the loss of Ron Duguay,
one of the most popular players in franchise history.
His signature skating style
with his hair flowing as he moved down the ice
captivated the Garden faithful,
and his skill, tenacity, and charisma earned him the admiration
of all New Yorkers. We join the hockey community
in sending our condolences to Ron's friends
family and loved ones during this difficult time
and uh we have another uh let's see we have
another okay so this is from uh Sarah Palin um it's
with uh shattered heart but also deep peace
knowing Ron is with Jesus now he fought
so hard love never ends yes so uh Tina and he's friend
of Good Day New York he's been here many times friends
of Good Day New York and i knew Ron
personally from 2008 when i was working at MSG Network
so he was an analyst for the New York
Rangers i was on the New York Knicks sideline
so i've known him this is this hits um when he was
diagnosed i mean i would text with Ron i mean yeah
that's a text thread you have with him right there
he congratulated me when i moved
into a new home he congratulated me i'm getting the chills uh
when i got this job because he had just we both kind
of left MSG at the same time
and um so let's see february is when he started posting
a lot about this cancer and i reached
out to him because my husband had colon cancer i knew Ron really well
so um i just he was so
nice to me and and that's the thing he was like he
was like a Hollywood star on ice right he was
married to Kim Alexis the supermodel they had all
of these gorgeous children while he was here with
the with the Rangers he was at Studio 54 he would
do magazine covers he was you know had the long
hair he was he was and he was a great you know
aggressive scoring forward offensive minded was
on the 1979 Rangers team that went to the Stanley Cup
but he had all this fun stuff he was so new
York right he was like a Joe Namath type a chef messing
when they were always at Studio 54 those
type of guys but um he was super nice loved
um just you know loved talking about the Rangers
one of his grandchildren is named Ranger talking about
that uh hold on a second
so that uh um we have something on our writer's desk here
which is from an appearance that he had
on Good Day talking about that sort
of like larger than life personality kind of thing yeah so we
gave him kind of a makeover it was like
a haircut i believe yes let's take a look at that this was
before i was full-time here all right let's take a look
That commercial
from 1980, who can
forget Sassoon
jeans and not many
opportunities to
do endorsements those years in the early 80s,
so we grabbed what we could and for us we
got to be together, we like to have fun and you know, there it is.
So tell us about what's going on,
I mean we kind of started the makeover yesterday, for
For those who don't know, the makeover is going to be a full makeover.
We're going to do it here live this morning
on Good Day New York, starting right after this.
And yesterday, you know, we went to Oscar Blondie and Luca Blondie.
I gave you a consultation right there.
And are you nervous about cutting the hair?
I am, yeah.
But I'm okay with it.
It's something that I've kind of, you know,
I go back to the 80s because I had such a good time.
And so I'm still kind of an old hippie,
so I still have a foot back in the 80s.
But I want to be modern.
And so I want to come up with a modern, more modern look.
And so tweaking the hair and maybe change the clothes a little bit.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
We changed the clothes a lot.
We went to Balenciaga yesterday,
and Nato helped us pick out some new clothes.
Take a look at some of the clothes.
I mean, you're going to look sharp.
I mean, there's going to be a tie involved?
Tie involved, yeah.
I'm okay.
It's just more, it's a cleaner look.
Because I have it in me to be that guy, okay?
that guy that that corporate looking that more updated looking guy
so i'm okay with it so uh i
i may appear nervous but i'm going to be okay with it
because you assured me that you're not
cutting my hair right no no but i did grab the scissors yesterday
and threatened to cut your hair
at Oscar Blondie all right so uh nonetheless we're asking people use
the hashtag Good day Doug and
give us your thoughts and what you think ron's going
to look like when all is said and done
and uh you'll have a new look tonight
when you go on the MSG sports anchor Duke Castiglione doing
interview there um yeah i mean you know i just
you could just tell he's got he's like charisma
yes and larger than life and loved life he loved his children
and his uh four grandchildren um i
love how these yeah messages are coming
in brian recognizing your comment you say rest in peace
ron duque very sad we know there
is a uh rangers nation out there yeah um so devastated morning
today um and he was on uh uh very recently i mean he shared
his uh cancer battle and so he he went
really public with it in february and that's
when i reached out to him to praying for you ron my
husband has colon cancer he was stage four
and he wrote thank you it's fixable and he had the prayer
the prayer hands emoji
um i i think i he had posted some positive news in april i sent him
clapping emojis and he always sent me like heart emojis back he
was always praying always praying
And then, um, right after the Knicks won the championship,
I had posted about the U S men's
national team doing a prayer on the field.
He wrote back to me, how amazing is this? So we
were just going back and forth.
And, um, he had just finished an inside edition thing about his
cancer, you know, and frustrated about it, about it.
You know, he had the term F cancer. And I
said, look, I can't wait to see it. You look strong.
He did look very good. So he had it
beat. It had various surgeries was looking great, looking strong.
And then he started,
something came back he had a relapse he fell he lost
his teeth he had a really hard time putting
weight back on can we see his picture just
on the ice again there allison just the tweet from the
Rangers yeah and this is him relatively recently
and then we have the tweet also from the Rangers
as well um just as we uh wrap up here
so the Rangers offering their condolences um to Ron's
friends family and loved ones during
this difficult time i know tina you counted him among as a friend
Yeah, I knew him a long time as a colleague and a colleague.
So our condolences to him and his family as well.
And we'll be keeping track of whatever comes next.
Tina, thank you for sharing.
Thank you.
Yeah, absolutely.
