With a major road closure now in northwest Atlanta,
parts of a bridge supporting structure
have collapsed. It happened
when a car hit part of that bridge on Moores Mill Road.
Here's Fox 5's Caitlin Pratt with more on the closure.
Quite a traffic pattern change
in the last 24 hours here in Ridgeview Heights.
Yes, after a truck plowed into a portion of the bridge,
making it impassable. Let's take a look
at the response from construction crews,
city officials, as they inspected that bridge. This
has been around for about 100 years' time now.
This is on Moores Mill Road, right over Peachtree
Creek. Yeah, water line was damaged.
Part of the structure collapsed into the water below.
At this point, crews are still assessing the damage.
No word right now on when the bridge
will actually reopen.
Drivers are being detoured along Ridgewood Road and West Wesley Road,
another alternate to Forest Ferry Road, too,
being recommended to avoid the closures. And this is a
cause for concern for local neighborhood leaders
who say the residential traffic, people on foot,
are being put in danger. Definitely a major road.
The Moores Mill Road Bridge over Peachtree Creek,
now off limits. Atlanta city officials say
a heavy vehicle struck the expanse causing a portion to
collapse. Our property lines up to the bridge here.
Looks like the collapse happened on the
other side. George Zena lives along this stretch in northwest Atlanta.
It's definitely one of the
major roads in Atlanta. I see a lot of traffic on here every day.
It definitely gets backed up
around school time in the morning.
Sky Fox 5 showing where the impact happened. The bridge
estimated to be 100 years old.
You can definitely tell this bridge is older than some others. Its
closure will be a factor not just for neighbors but commuters too.
Drivers are now being detoured
along Ridgewood Road and West Wesley Road.
Crews are still assessing the damage and deciding on a
plan for repairs or replacement.
I have a newborn at the house so all the beeping and construction
that's to come is not going to be super fun.
Hopefully it's a quick fix and we move on. A
Replacement sounds like over a year.
It's great to see this progress,
but it needs to be something that happens in a way that's coordinated
and that includes communication with the community.
And we're reaching out to city officials to try to get
a better handle on a timetable of when this road,
this busy stretch of road, will be back open.
That's the latest here in northwest Atlanta.
I'm Caitlin Pratt, Fox 5 News.
Caitlin, thank you for that update.
