Alright, welcome back into Good DDC.
Get ready to satisfy your sweet tooth because Taylor's Cake Place
is joining us in the studio with her creative Jumbo Cupcakes.
And a big vision for growing a D.C. business.
We're talking sweet treats and entrepreneurial dreams with Taylor,
owner and founder of Taylor's Cake Place.
Thanks so much for joining us.
Welcome. Thank you.
Let's start with where, I mean, we walked in and instantly we're like,
it smells like fall and we're going to get into the seasonal flavors.
But just where did this dream come from for you
if we're talking about being an entrepreneur?
newer? Honestly it came from I always wanted to be a pastry chef
so in college I got laid off from
my job and then I went home
and had enough supplies to bake some cakes and mini bundt cakes
so then I just sold out in a weekend
and I said okay I could turn this into a business. I got this.
Did anyone inspire your interest in pastries or?
I think my grandmother like we would always bake
when I was a little girl and just to do it now it's
so cool and I just love I love that I always
love baking with her. Yeah. I love that you took
a misfortune in life and you turned it into an
opportunity because so many people would be down on that.
And you said, no, this is my opportunity
to create something new. So tell us a little bit about these cupcakes
and the seasonal flavors
that we're going to get here today. Yes.
And there's no large. The jumbo cups. If you're
going to go, go big, McKay. Exactly. You have to.
So today I have cinnamon bun, Oreo, apple cider,
ginger snap pumpkin spice cookie um and then we're going
to be decorating spooky marshmallow
and then over here is my classic flavors it's very vanilla
and cinnamon swirl oh my gosh wow
so your menu it changes monthly yeah you were telling me
so oh my gosh how do you come up with
different flavors and concepts oh my gosh it could be difficult
but when i'm out i'll just look around
and i'll see things i'm like oh
that snack look good maybe i can turn into a cupcake so definitely
like even with um cinnamon bun oreo i was in the store
and i just saw they had limited edition
cinnamon bun Oreos and I'm like that would be a good cupcake.
You kind of surprised me with that
one because typically you think of fall you think there just might
be like a pumpkin flavor maybe a
cinnamon flavor or apples but you've really taken it
to the next level with the creativity. How are
we going to be decorating and what's in this cupcake?
Yes so okay so this is um the spooky
marshmallow and inside is a marshmallow fluff
and then um we're going to have spooky sorry sprinkles
and then we're going to put buttercream
and then we're going to roll it in the spooky
sprinkles and then top it
with a marshmallow. Okay. Is there a trick
too? Because you made them look so beautiful
here. I know. Is there a trick to doing this?
I guess just put pressure on it
and then just lean in with it
and swirl it. Do you start from the middle,
Taylor? I do start. I think I
start from the middle, yeah. Oh, this takes
some muscle. It does. Wow.
Oh my goodness. This is not easy.
Hold on.
look let me not mess up your cupcake no but you're doing good
y'all i'm like thank you
well you know i don't think it's as pretty as yours
oh yours was so much better makia you know i
tried you know i i love oh we got to roll it
first yes will it fall off no it should
be good you can pick it up oh nope yeah will it fall off
okay because we have here i helped with the okay
the marshmallow okay there we go okay
Look how pretty that is.
It is cute.
It tastes good.
It's going to taste good,
but that's what we can say
at the very least.
Oh my gosh,
I think you just gave some families
some really good ideas
how to make spooky treats.
Exactly.
Or just order from you.
There you go.
How can I do that?
Yeah, so you can order
on my website,
taylorscakeplace.com
and yeah,
you just place your order on there
and you pick what day
you want to deliver
or pick up.
Okay.
What's the most like
crazy,
the craziest flavor
you've ever come up with
that turned out
really, really good?
Where you saw something
And you're like, let me turn that into a cupcake.
And then it was just a hit.
I think it would be maybe
the apple cider over there.
Okay.
That was really like, how can I do this?
How can I make an apple cider cupcake?
But it came out good.
Okay.
Well, listen.
I'm going to hold back.
She's going to go on in.
Thank you so much for joining us,
letting McKee and I get a little creative.
I don't think we're going to be in the kitchen
with you doing any of this decorating.
But McKee will dine in and eat.
We'll be your taste testers.
Okay, cool.
All right, thank you for joining us in here.
Steve, do you want us to bring you a cupcake?
That's a good one.
A whole plate of them.
I appreciate the offer, ladies.
It looks amazing.
Rochelle, here's the deal.
They can have their apple cider cupcake.
We got our tequila drinks going on here, right?
Yeah.
