Fast-moving grass fire caused Canada’s military base tragedy

The cause of this fire is under active investigation. What it would say is there were multiple training activities happening throughout the training area at the time. Uncommonly strong winds cause the fire to spread rapidly and shift direction towards the range administrative area. What followed was one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime. The nation is in mourning for those brave members of our armed forces who we have lost. I've asked that the flags on all federal buildings to be flown at half-mast to honor them. Our hearts go with and we are praying for the wounded and we stand in solidarity and compassion for the families, the friends, and the colleagues of all those affected by this tragedy. I've seen burns, I've seen people that were getting unloaded out of the back of that military vehicle that were wrapped in pretty much tin foil. I heard people screaming inside of those vehicles that will never end up being out of my mind. Like I said, it was just a scene from a war movie. Thank you.
