Canucks make Sneaky good move...
Oct 16, 2026
The Vancouver Canucks make a sneaky good trade.
As Ryan Johnson announced it today,
they've traded Aatu Rotu to the Toronto Maple Leafs
in exchange for two young prospects
with one being labeled as the perfect workhorse.
We're going to break down everything you need to know
on the two players the Canucks just got back in this trade,
what it means moving forward,
and how the Vancouver Canucks are slowly building up the pipeline
outside of the draft.
We're going to break down all this and so much more
in this episode but before we start remember
to reach a goal of 10,000 subscribers so if you
haven't hit the subscribe button yet
but you want to stay up to date with everything around the
Canucks from prospects trades anything
at all make sure to go down and hit it we're so close
just about 100 and some odd away
so shout out to absolutely everyone watching and let's just dive
straight into it today where the Canucks trade Aatu Rotu
to the Toronto Maple Leafs after clearing
waivers just a day ago now with Aatu Rotu of course
a lot of people might say why did the Leafs just
not claim him and of course
with the whole cap you can send them down they have 30 days to send
them up and down between the Toronto Maple Leafs
and the Marlies but the Vancouver Canucks went out
and in this trade acquired two very interesting young pieces
and that comes back with Jacob
Quinlan and Brandon Burr now of course losing Aatu Rotu sucks
a very young player that a lot of
Canucks fans absolutely adored myself included
and a young guy that's incredible when it comes to the
draft looking at this of course the Canucks took
on a bit of cap space both guys will be buried in
the minors so it's not going to affect them going
into the remainder season not that the cap really
mattered at this point but getting back Brandon Burr
and Jacob Quinlan adds two very young pieces
to this Canucks AHL team
and ECHL where Ryan Johnson spoke on the trade and said two new young
players to work with and that's exactly what it
is now diving into this of course Jacob Quinlan
signed with the Toronto team coming out
of college we've seen Brandon Burris sign with the team as
well coming out of union with his professional path both joined
the Canucks after this trade
with Oto Rotu and again diving into how this works
and why the Canucks are looking good good for
Oto Rotu and Toronto good trade for the Canucks I
do agree with this both sides are genuinely
getting a lot but Jacob Quinlan
is a very interesting piece coming back to the system
and I'm quite excited to see how this young kid
who has NHL experience just from last season
continues to progress looking at Quinlan
in 24 25 37 points in 67 AHL games 18 goals with the
Marlies 36 points in 40 AHL games in 25 26 now joining
the team with three points in 24 NHL
games this is a young guy that of course again has
that NHL experience not a ton and not someone
that's to run home and write about already
but the biggest thing now with Jacob Quinlan a young
24 year old winger slash center that can play both
of the positions has had that stretch of
games for the Leafs when they sadly ended up winning
that first overall pick though we got
the best player in Calum Altrichter so who really cares
but looking at Jacob Quinlan over a stretch
of those games with the Leafs 10
and a half minutes time on ice we can see very comparable
to a rate when it comes to the time three points including
a goal a minus five but again
not a great team what we're going to see out of Jacob Quinlan
and what a lot of people rave about
including diving into Cam Robinson
or sorry Dave Paul he speaks to say oddly enough i've had to
watch both of these guys in my NCAA watch
to listen over at the Daily Faceoff Vancouver for
a few seasons Jacob Quinlan is a real workhorse
that can do it all i was a big fan at the time
he signed with Pro Tickets this is a guy
that again isn't going to shoot out the gate and
immediately become a 20 goal scorer within the Canucks system
but a guy that's had success over
his AHL career 37 points in 67 games again
in 24-25 getting the call up to the Leafs last season
putting up three points one goal in 23 games going back
to the Marlies for the remainder of that
season 36 points nearly a point per game
and being held scoreless to start the season but now going
down and getting that speed added
to an absurd lineup we can see he could still carve out a
depth energy role with his skating
and diving into his scouting report a young guy that of course has
a great highlight pace
and net drive college defensive value offers a route beyond scoring
which you love to see because a lot
of the young guys pushing through the NHL and a lot of these
guys that are undrafted tend to come through
with either a great defensive game and no offense
Dave Campbell for example not an NCAA guy
or a guy that comes through with an offensive piece and no
defense Quinlan is carving out a role of having both
of those two with the work ethic mentality
is going to be fun on how a little defensive scrappy guy gets
into the lineup he plays with
detail and determination in all three zones now
of course getting Quinlan you'll have to end up
signing him after the season as an RFA I do believe it's group six
but I can break that down later in
a different video 850k again isn't going to be the biggest cap hit
when you're looking across
and Rick Dalley will be speaking on this as well
not only is Jacob Quinlan a great piece but Brandon
Burr is from North Van and the Canucks tried hard
to get him last season when he left Union College
they like this player a lot Burr will start in the ECHL
and that dives straight into the second
piece that hasn't even been spoke about in Brandon Burr
and the scoring that he brings now of course
Canucks fans a lot of people are going to look
and say hey the Canucks didn't go out to get a
second round pick and of course
the Bo Horvat trade doesn't look the best thank god we got Phil Pronka
with one of those picks but the biggest thing
is is the Canucks place this player on waivers the
opportunity is not there for Ohto again
but going into of course what Burr brings to the
lineup is a big body or a body that had 11 goals
and 24 points in 35 games at Union 19 goals and
28 points in the season following a 24-25 jumping
in at even strength 19 goals 36 points 7 power
play goals this is a kid that adds
a legitimate another piece now 24 years old yet again his
size and skating offer a check
and wing route shot is a tool worth developing must become more
reliable defensively but his college scoring was good
so if this can translate even to an AHL to
help build if this is Brayden Coutts getting
a new linemate that ends up being a point per game
pace next to him we love to see it Burr will need
to add leverage in size lean into his physicality
and improve defensively now of course going into Burr
and what he brings to the team looking
through Union some very good seasons in the ECAH
or ECAH with 35 games played 19 goals in back-to-back
years this is a young player 24 years old
from North Van we love to see the Vancouver boys come
six foot two 200 pounds again these are players
that are coming from free you took the risk of
placing Oteratu on waivers he cleared waivers
so a guy that didn't have a path within the team a guy
that wasn't going to ever be able to hit
his potential we love that Oteratu gets to go over
to Toronto and i don't want Toronto to win
but i hope Oteratu has a very good career and the
Canucks get two young guys two assets in five
or two assists in five NHL games but of course
fans aren't going to be pleased Oteratu
is my favorite i agree a huge part of my fandom last
year was Oteratu and of course the doghouse memes
and getting them into the lineup of fans i want
to know your thoughts what are your thoughts
on the Canucks actually getting some young guys that
they can have the new development priorities
of course with the Canucks they still have a lot of
young guys within their starting lineup we see
in the game this is being recorded immediately after
sadly losing in overtime but their lines looked insane
but this is a team that has some young guys
they have it through the system, we know Braden Koots
in the AHL looking outstanding, Kael
Maholtre highlight reel in the NCAA
and that's not even looking at Adam Davin in the AHL
this is a team that needs to stack their prospects, one
of them's bound to hit and the Canucks have
quite a few that more than one are going
to be good, let me know your thoughts on everything
down in the comments because again i love reading through each
and every one of them, you guys are
incredible for the support, once again let me know
your thoughts on the trade, grade it from an A to
an F, i'd give this a solid A, you got two guys
for free, one from North Van and another guy that has
a bit of potential there for a guy
that you almost lost some waivers for nothing, let me know your
thoughts down in the comments, take care, Canucks
Canucks fans, see you in the next one, go Canucks
hopefully we get a win next time
