Hello folks! As promised, weekly video uploads are back.
I'm getting ready right now to go on a long distance,
pretty decent, hardcore canoe trip with Buddy Doug.
We're going to do over 175 kilometers of paddling
and portage across Algonquin Park.
So, the Petawawa River starts on the outside,
on the west side, and it flows east, kind
of up, and then out, through a bunch of lakes on the way.
We're going to do the full thing.
We're going to be paddling across Algonquin.
So pretty excited for that.
We've heard some stories about
the portages being very bad condition this year.
We have like 30 to 40 kilometers
of portage during this 175 kilometer trip.
So that's a lot of portaging.
We're going to be single carrying it all
because if say 40 kilometers turns into 120, if you
have to double carry it because you're going back three times.
But we're not going to be doing that, we're
going to be single carrying, I've got about
30 pounds in my backpack, I just weighed it right now,
I'm all squared away, everything's
done.
That's food, water, everything all in.
Actually I don't really have to carry water,
I have this new water bottle that I'm going
to be
using.
called the Katadyn or Katadyn
BeFree, it's actually pretty cool, it's a water filter
in a bottle all in one
so it's small, it's about 500 mils here, half a liter, but the filter is
right here and the flow is like three times faster than
the Sawyer Squeeze, so it's just no
brainer for me, um I haven't used it
on a real real trip yet, I used it on like some family stuff
but uh yeah I hope it holds up, I think it will
and if not I do have water drops to make up for
if this fails, but I'm super impressed with this, with the flow
and super excited to use it
so don't have to carry water like i'm saying we're near water
the whole time scoop and drink
scoop and drink as we go
and then this is so small that it's going to fit inside my cargo
pocket in my pants so i don't have
to worry about like accessing it just just like that
okay well let's dive into some stuff um i guess i'll go
with stuff that's outside my backpack
first my shoes i bought these at the beginning
of the season these are Merrell Rapids uh they're
got some neoprene in them they're really good shoes
but they fall apart these are my second
pair of shoes in two years but Merrell is pretty good
or Merrell Merrell Merrell it's pretty good
about returning uh the shoes if you destroy them within
a year they'll take your money back so i
just got a brand new pair for free
which is no big deal anyways good shoes they dry out really
quick that's the reason i like them they dry out
really quick they're very lightweight they have
this constrictor um lace on them
so i don't have to spend time tying my shoes and the laces don't
stay wet they're not very thick at all they're more
of like a almost like a wire so yeah good
shoes I'll be wearing these every day and then at camp
when my if it gets chilly I have a pair
of neoprene socks that I'll put on as camp shoes
a small little nylon belt I don't like to use
a leather belt when I'm doing
this because you get wet it stays wet small nylon belt it's perfect
these are the clothes I'll be wearing I have extra clothes in my bag
but these this is the
clothes I'll be wearing every day unless
it gets extremely cold or wet. I have a
pair of Darn Tough socks. Oh excuse me,
just threw up a little bit in my mouth. I got a
pair of like medium weight half-height socks.
Usually wear socks a little bit
smaller than these but it's getting to be fall so.
Underwear as always
merino wool t-shirt and my Tilly nylon pants.
They're zip-offs but the zip-offs
are so high and so loose that I don't think I'll
be using them because things
might fall out. That like gave me a sure buddy kind of look.
Alright, what else?
I got a tripod. A very small tripod for my trip.
Tripod I'm using right now I
will not be bringing because it's too heavy
but this is a crappy tripod. Again
I bought, this is my third
or fourth one I bought of these. Very lightweight. It's
like 20 or 30 bucks but it's small,
it's lightweight and then it also extends the
full length. It does what it needs to do, but it's very cheap.
It's by Nextech. It's
like a source kind of brand or something.
And it comes with this little nylon bag that
I never use, but I thought maybe I'll bring it
this time just in case I can strap it to
the outside of my backpack.
And if it's not working out too good, then I can just fold
the nylon bag up and throw it in the bottom.
So with that, now I'm using my Canon 80D,
but I'll be bringing my Nikon D5500,
my old trusty, old faithful, because I have like
six batteries for this. I only have three batteries for that.
Batteries are at 120 bucks
a pop. And I am more comfortable with this camera.
I've shot way more videos with this
camera. I know how to use this camera better than the AED,
which I'm just shooting on basically
auto right now. I will learn it better.
It will be fine. But for this kind of trip, I'm
going to use this. I am going to bring my microphone as well,
my shotgun mic. Along
with that, I do have an Olympus
point shoot, which is waterproof.
GoPro Hero 5. That's
going to attach to my canoe with this handy dandy bike attachment
and then my GoPro session
which
is on another little tripod.
So that's my filming stuff, my camera,
I have extra batteries and all that fun stuff packed
away.
I have my Outdoor Research ball cap,
although I don't like the traditional baseball or sorry
the traditional canoeing hats like the Tillys
that go all the way around or any kind like
that, they just look silly on me, I look like a goof.
This works all right, I'll wear that when I need to.
Keep the sun off my head.
We're gonna be on the river the whole time
and this isn't specifically a fishing trip,
this is more of a fast trip, kind of light and quick,
but we're gonna be on the river, there is brook trout
and to not bring my fishing pole, it would be silly.
So we're not gonna dedicate too much time to fishing
but I'm hoping to grab a few trout.
Got some braid on there
and my nice little small six foot fishing pole.
Okay, my food, this is the bulk of my bag.
I'll go through this in a minute,
but this is in a Ursack. It's a Kevlar bag
You guys have seen me use it a couple times now.
It's got a lock proof or smell proof bag inside of all my food
This is all my food for seven full days.
We're going six nights, but it's a seven day trip
We're not going to get out. We have to do like 30 kilometers
on the last day, so seven full days
Of food in here, which is pretty decent. It's probably
12 pounds or so got an extra dry bag for my camera in
case I'm using it and it's raining trusty Primloft
fake down coat with tons of burn holes all through it
but that's my main my main warmth it's supposed
to get down as low as four degrees celsius
and as high as 20 degrees celsius 20 degrees celsius is
like 68 i believe yeah she's saying yes
and four is low 30s she's saying yes so that's the main
thing for warmth for me again like i said
when i get to camp if i do need shoes if it's cold
if my feet are going to be wet 100% I guarantee it it's water entries
and exits in my boat but
I have these mac neoprene booties that I'll put
on at camp not in the daytime because I won't need
it but at camp if I'm too wet
and cold those will be my footwear and they're almost worn out
no big deal I got like half
a 26er of copper pot it's whiskey
40 creek copper pot not much
for six nights. I got a sit pad,
not bringing a chair because this is Algonquin Park and nine
times out of ten there's going to be some kind
of bench already previously made. Again, I'm trying
to go lightweight too. This is my rain gear.
This is Arcteryx Rain Shell and Mountain Hardware Rain
Pants. Hoping not to use those.
The weather is supposed to be pretty nice. I got a boat repair
kit, my knife, my Algonquin knife,
the Possible's pouch with toilet paper,
bug spray, which
I hope there's no bugs because I'm not bringing a screen for my tent,
sunscreen, extra water
drops, compass, headlight, lighter, batteries,
all the good stuff, stuff that will just be
loose in here that I need to keep together.
I got a new cooking pot, this is a Toks 1100,
I was using a Snow Peak 900 for the longest
time. The one that had that horrible lid on it that would always fall off.
So my good buddies
over at Bush Buddy, the stove, the twig stove company,
sent me this as a thank you for using
their Bush Buddy, which is really nice
because I'd be using it anyway. So the lid is not
a crappy lid. It actually fits on.
And then inside I've got my Bush Buddy twig stove,
which I love and use all the time.
Doug's going to be bringing his too. So for communal
gear Doug's bringing a full-size
or a Boy's Axe, a 26 inch Gransfors and I've got my Boreal 21
folding saw so we're gonna have no problem getting
a ton of wood a lot of the sites we'll be at are
very remote people don't go there that often
so I'm sure there'll be wood and we have the
tools to process it
so got my Snow Peak spork
as well got my first aid kit and more
extensive first aid kit in here and my camera batteries,
SD cards, all that fun stuff in
there. Another little stuff sack.
The poles to my tent. Poles and pegs to my tent. My
tent with just the footprint and the fly.
It has no bug screen like I was saying. It's
very, very small. This is the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1, like always.
This thing is amazing.
I love the tent. The only thing
that could make it better is a side entry instead of
the front vestibule.
My pillow, my down pillow, old faithful, had it forever.
Doesn't do much,
but it does exactly what I need it to do.
so lightweight, packs down, I love it. My extra
clothes, I have two pairs of socks, one pair of underwear,
a polyester hoodie, a thin polyester
hoodie, and a pair of long johns.
Another communal piece of gear is my tarp.
This is a 10 by 10
silnylon tarp that Kyle made.
I'm still up in the air about if I'm going to bring it or not.
There's only supposed to be rain one day so far.
I'm going to probably bring it and see right before
how I feel about it. We do have some logistical stuff
that we have to do because it's a river
trip. We're not doing a loop, right?
So we have to go up a day early because the start and the end
is like a four hour or five hour drive away from each other.
So we have to do the whole drop the
cut one car off we've got to drive up separately drop one
car off put both canoes on the other car
drive back around stay in the hotel
and drive back to the beginning in the morning so there's
a little bit of logistical thing going on that's why i can wait
and see i can still look on the
weather before we go and see if i absolutely need
to bring this or not i would hope not to but it's
no big deal if i do have to doug like i said has
the axe he has some fish crisp and he has a frying
pan for communal stuff
and so far I only have if I don't bring the tarp I only have the saw
so we'll see how that goes this is my sleeping bag
this is a mountain hardware phantom spark
negative two celsius and my thermarest neo air xtherm
as my sleeping bag pad so that's everything
in my backpack bringing my life vest
and inside
the pocket I have extensive fishing kit for
brook trout but that's about it i have
a couple bigger spoons in there i might do some bass near
the end of it because we do get into some bassy pikey areas near
the end of the trip and then in
the other side i've got
my fishing license a space blanket
and the whistle as far as i like to bring
a bag in the car with me always
because i'll bring clothes that i can change into when i'm done the
trip and things that i want to go over before i actually set off
so i do have three maps i have
three Jeff's maps because we're going to be the western the southern
and the eastern portion or
the western central and the eastern portion of the park
because it's so big it's broken up into three
three maps I have to use all
those Doug I think has some laminated things but I'll obviously only
be using one at a time these will go at the bottom
of my backpack the GPS system I'm supposed to test
out this go telly so I got
that I got some instructions written down and stuff here check
that out I got one for Doug as well
so I'll figure all that out I've got our camping itinerary
be every night and then the distances first day
is 27 clicks that's the biggest day yeah 175 total
and 23.5 kilometers on the last day before we get to our cars
and try and drive home i've also got
this soft platypus water bottle which will go in my backpack
and that's for in case i have a failure
with my water filter i can use the drops
and in conjunction with that some extra tape an extra
Extra big Ziploc bag
of bread, you never know.
Modeling,
the lovely Will is modeling the Kevlar bag for us.
She in there,
for me
chippies.
We got mixed chips, we got party mix.
M&M's, can never forget, can never forget M&M's.
M&M peanuts,
but yeah.
Chocolate bar.
What else?
Energy gel?
Yeah, Clif bars, energy gel, some peanut butter,
all sorts of.
Little protein snacks.
Yeah.
Monterey Jack cheese,
we got some salami in there.
Every day.
Every
day.
lovely wife makes the dinners
and I dehydrate them.
Dinner of chili. I'm being
dehydrated right now.
Six dinners but I want to have a little bit extra just in
case we get stuck there for a day.
Hopefully there will be fish as well.
Quinoa salad or quinoa stir fry.
What was in it?
There was mushrooms, green peppers,
red peppers, water chestnuts, onions,
chicken and garlic. And quinoa.
spaghetti. So we got four meals there.
Spaghetti, two chilies, quinoa. Let's take a break. Some of
you have heard me say this before,
of all the protein and just do a full rice meal. So we got
these Uncle Ben's fine urban wild rice.
Got two of those and those will go with like two pepperonis
each for dinner for two nights.
And I will break that up with the, I'll break the chili and the
spaghetti and stuff up with that. So six meals for six nights.
Again, like I said, I'll go grab it
right now. I want you to entertain the folks, honey.
Do
anything.
No.
This is the...
Hold this. Here, pick some up
and drop it back in there.
Hold on, hold on. There you go. That's the
chili. More flaky. Chili
flakes. Very gross looking while it's dehydrating.
rehydrating. Looks phenomenal.
That's
a good half meal
there at least. That's probably as much as that.
So, yeah. Anyways, we'll
be good. Yeah, pretty excited for this
trip. I haven't done any kind of
actual canoe trip since
my caribou trip. Like a big
extended one, so looking very forward to this.
What are you, are you looking forward to me
leaving? Good or sweet? Yeah, might love it.
We still have a five year old running around.
It's quite a time when I'm gone.
I'm going to be able to be sure to post the actual video
when I'm back. Interesting, or I'm going to say,
you look taller than me. I should sit
up. I keep my back straight. I do now.
I'm a hunchy kind of guy. Oh, you do? Yeah, I
do. Stick around for the actual trip video, and I'll see you soon.
