-- Join me in this Canadian adventure. Shawn James from the YouTube channel My Self Reliance and I set off from his log cabin in the forest, we hike in the snow, pulling sleds carrying our camping gear. We travel to a frozen lake, set up a snowtrekker hot tent, chop firewood for the cold night, and auger holes in the ice so we can ice fish. We catch a few northern pike, and cook them up for supper, all while experiencing camping in a supermoon. Enjoy! Good morning guys, how you doing?
Thanks for tuning in. Today's going to be a good day.
I'm up at my self-reliance cabin, buddy Sean James built.
And today we are going to head out on an ice fishing trip.
Packing up our sleds right now. We're going to head out
that way to a couple little lakes Sean knows about.
Maybe get into some pike or walleye tonight.
I've got my snow trekker hot tent in here with a wood stove.
It'll be nice and comfortable.
It's supposed to be pretty cold today, negative
20 so it'll be helpful whoa so come along
with us maybe we'll catch some fish but definitely have a
good time
so we came
to a
potential
camp spot
there's
a couple
here we've
been
walking on
this lake for a little
while um here's one that's right off the lake it looks like it can be
relatively flat this doesn't look
so bad snowshoe hair tracks going
through we'll try that other
spot too yeah thanks yeah you might be able to make it work
but you don't know what's under here
right there's a pump here it could
be yeah all right back out on the ice it's nice this ice uh
like sean was saying earlier doesn't have
so much snow on it so it's easy for walking there's also
grip and the sled the sleds
slide very easily dry land oh
this looks better dude it's it's uh
eight by ten yeah for sure it'll fit there lengthwise yeah it's just
a bit rectangular
but yeah we'll just put the door
on this so they'll fit perfectly there yeah that's yeah
about the straightest we're gonna get um yeah
this is better there are yeah there's some well
there's some right here it's uh not the greatest it's softwood
but there's a lot of it it keeps
going it seems i keep seeing dead wood we got uh like
a balsam fir here perfectly dry there too
Yeah, this is suitable. Yeah, even
we could even come back in here right here
All right, I guess we'll go down get the sleds
About negative 20 right now.
So anything we're doing with our hands kind of hurts
But doing the long hike out to the lake here. We really warmed up
That helps a lot. I was able to wrap everything in my 5x7
mast. Trying to keep the snow off of it. And then I can also use it
as my ground sheet inside the tent. So, oh man
it's cold. Shovel, sleeping bag,
and my pillow in here.
The stove, the tent, stove poles.
You've
seen me
use this
tent
once
before
in my
camping
with the
subscriber
video.
Scott and I camped in this for a night a couple months ago.
This is my snow trucker
tent comes with these poles. They make a frame. They make an A-frame.
Use the A-frame, stretch the canvas over top.
Nice warm, cozy home for the night.
Looking for,
this is the one with both ends open.
So this is going to be a cross piece of cross. The other ones have
one end closed like that.
And that's the end that's going to go in the ground.
Against the ground. One cross piece
is exactly what we need.
with
these Y
brackets.
So, Sean, can you grab one
of those long ones, please?
Side, set it
up, length,
this one,
side.
You see how it's really easy to actually put together,
seeing the way we operate,
and look how easy it is for us.
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
All right, did we do this right?
I think that Y piece, the long, yeah, there you go.
See?
Now we just gotta drape the actual tent over top.
Benny Hill, you need
to get in the back.
Hill, you're too young.
I know, I'm showing my age, Sean.
So this
part's
easy.
That just kind of goes in the top corner and everything else follows.
In the corners,
in the bottom, there's
little pockets.
The rubberized part.
The
leather
strap goes
in the
middle
of it.
On the side there, you kind of leave the metal hanging out.
Sorry, the leather part hanging out in the middle.
One side through, then put the leather part on.
On
the
inside.
All right, Sean's finishing up the last tie out.
And she's all set up.
Just gonna set up the stove now. Let's go inside and check her out.
It's always hard to do this with one hand.
Got her. Oh yeah. Look at this. This is actually pretty flat.
Relatively, uh, relatively, relatively, relatively flat, flat.
Plenty of room. We have, uh, one guy sleep
on the very back wall, on the short wall. Sleep.
That wall, lengthways.
Sorry, that wall, lengthways.
Stove goes in there.
Oh, speaking of stoves, my mind.
I think that's how I had it last.
It was better use of space.
Exactly.
That's the false bottom from Canadian outdoor equipment,
so you don't have to put fire bricks in.
Oh, yeah.
Because the fire bricks are pain, right?
You know, they're banging all around.
They weigh a lot.
And to empty it, too, they follow it with the ashes.
You pick them all back up.
This thing, let me see.
I want to make sure the stainless steel says Joe.
That's the important part.
It's called the Joe.
Called the Joe, it obviously hasn't been used yet.
I got this again from Canadian outdoor equipment
They hook it up, check those guys out, and this fits in the trucker model
Niko stove from
Niko which Snow Trucker sells, so this again is a Snow Trucker tent.
There's an 8 by 10
Expedition crew, it tore up
there. There was one part where it's not good
Yeah, and then we just get the tripod
rested on there, call it good
and it's hard
for me
to see, looks like
it's recording
so I'm just out
on the uh the lake
right now the sun's out here, it's
a little bit warmer than in the woods in the shade
uh Sean's having lunch, I already ate some snacks
and stuff, I'm having a little midday beer out on
the lake, so yeah, pretty soon uh gonna drill some holes for some fishies
and cut some firewood for
tonight, that's a that's a must for sure, it's time
for us to auger up some holes, try to get some
fishies
yeah just
whenever
you want me
to take over
I'll need to spin
for a bit
okay that
was a lot of
work and a whole lot of work
I'll go to a few, Sean's down there setting up the
fishing rods and minnows and all that stuff
so I'm gonna go up in the woods
behind me here, start collecting some wood for tonight and then go down there
and join Sean and start fishing
What video was that from?
I've got my axe with me but
I'm gonna use Sean's new axe. This is from Toronto blacksmith.
Looks pretty badass to be honest with you.
Let's
see
how
she
works.
From the
ground,
it's full
of fat wood.
Check this out,
all fat wood
right there.
We got one, nice,
not very lively.
Catch a couple of those.
Yep, it's
a good meal for one.
Nice,
decent,
heck
yeah.
I got one
on too,
how cool
is that?
We're gonna let this guy go,
nice.
Bass
for the win.
Split shot really help on here.
Those little minnows don't wanna fall.
So I'm not gonna pretend like I know anything
about ice fishing, but from what I've been told here,
We're trying to keep it up about a foot off the bottom
and this is not very deep at all right here
So doesn't take much line out
Gather some
of this dry exposed grass here.
So when we go to start
the fire tonight some good tinder
There's our fatwood we gathered too, which you can use in conjunction.
It's just nice to have
You know everything all in the bank ready to go
before night time actually look right above where I'm
at here's this birch and I can really grab
some nice pieces
of birch bark off
that guy's hip
dead super dead
one in here
it's got a nice
feel
in here okay
cut up some
firewood yep
for the wood
stove
little bit
that length
not much
longer it's about ideal maybe 15 inches tops softwood
a lot of this is conifer you have one
piece of maple there
but really the wood stove
is so efficient so much
of it it's fine nice and dry
like perfectly dry never tell
you firewood excites me good dry
firewood yeah i bet you uh make some
really nice curls out of it oh my knife
is cold knife handle is cold yeah look at that it's got
its natural check in it like i always say to look
for right there do a bow drill with this one so
even though we cleared out a lot of the snow
or all of the snow from underneath
the tent when we start the fire
in the wood stove it tends to sink down into
the ground even even though like I said
the snow is gone it'll still melt the
ground underneath and kind of get a little wampus
so I'm going to cut three
lengths of a log that's buried in the snow over here
and put it underneath the
wood stove so that it has
a little bit more stable base so this this log of
that I'm gonna grab have to kind of unbury it
from the snow I want to use it because
it's not good not good
for firewood okay well
maybe I'll kick it
into lengths this yeah I can
just cut
this in
half and
use these
these
three
pieces
come
on each side or
I could
do that
anyways
that's pretty secure pretty solid
pretty sturdy level just make
some uh little shavings and stuff
with my knife
a little bit and
this is balsam
fir pretty
soft wood nice
and thin airy
fluffy curls
Gotta love it. We
do actually have quite a bit of wood.
That's good. It's dark early
it's starting to like just starting to get stay late
a little bit longer not getting dark right at five these days
maybe about six almost six
so it's getting better and there's company which is always nice
so able to sit in here tonight going walleye fish too
There's some walleye in there
you saw I got that pike and bass Sean got a pike too, but walleye'd be great
Even if we don't eat them, I'm just cool to catch them.
We're gonna eat those pike up for sure
I let the bass go like you saw those pikes are gonna get eaten up.
It's cool. I haven't eaten pike probably
Since woodland caribou last time I hung with Sean.
Maybe I did in Algonquin with Doug, but I don't think so
This is a little bit different than
my normal videos ice fishing part of it.
Just pretty cool. It's it's new to me
I've only ever been ice fishing once before that was down near
Peterborough and we were fishing for perch and it was inside like a
a really nice ice fishing hut and the guy
who owned it can bring us out like picnic lunch and
everything so pretty nice not like this up here
this is way more rugged very cool this is my this
is my thing up here for sure plus
the perch fishing wasn't
that great oh having a good time
it's nice to be out for a couple days doing doing
different things you know what i mean the last
last uh video yesterday was uh hanging out at sean's place
and that was fun too it was nice
to relax and kind of explore that that area and talk about future trips
reminisce on trips we've done in the past
so maybe tonight we'll sit down and
have a little chat on camera about trips
that are gonna come up that we might do
together alright so we're sitting pretty
here three pikes so far each one bigger
than the last eating good tonight as you can see
Sean lugged out the old ice hut getting
a little chilly we're gonna sit in
there tonight and fish
for walleye rather than just sitting out in the open
so that's
kind
of cool
really
gotta
push down
on these
things it's
already
warm
in here
the holes
steam
come off
my hands
bring
me one
look at
this guy
bringing chairs what a nice guy it's
no peasant life out on the ice over here
life no luck in a
little while inside
the tent I think I'm
gonna go up into
the woods into the shelter
and I'm about to shelter the hot tent get the stove
going we got lots of wood I still gotta cut some wood up
so Sean's cleaning up
the fish right now it's almost suppertime anyway so good use of time
will be I'm gonna warm that bad boy up
It's getting pretty cold. The thing is we're
moving around all day and warmed ourselves up
and kept that warmth because
we kept moving around
but now I sat in that little hut for about an hour or so
and just got really chilled
Oh, the sun's going down too.
It's crazy there's not much
snow up here. Not much snow anywhere right now.
A lot farther north than I've
been this year or this winter it's less snow than
than I've been dealing with
I'm just gonna make some
super fine curls I got
my glove on we're fine curls
to strike with the fire steel I guess I got yeah I will
the grass is hard to
maneuver after it's
didn't see down there
so I'll leave these right on the
stick that way I can move them after they're lit stick them
in the wood stove
and light the other stuff.
Dude, it's cold.
A little shock cord around my fire steel.
Good idea.
Once again, I got this false bottom in here.
It's going to create airflow
and make the bottom of the stove not warp out
when
it
gets
super...
Here's Sean yelling.
I don't know if he's going to fish.
Catching anything
with my hands hurts.
Okay, I'm going to go grab some wood from outside.
I got some split up.
I split this bad boy up a little bit real quick.
from adventure
sworn it's like being
a reunited
with an old friend
sean's yelling for me we're gonna go see what the commotion is
it's probably got a lunker on there maybe
a walleye a walleye be sweet
Really
good
fight
like
taking
line
out it
certainly
is
warming
up in
here
quite quickly i had two down jackets
on you probably lose one of those guys i
assume it's getting dark it's 20 after five
The hat head. You ever get that one? You wear a toque
or a hat for a long time, it crushes your ears and your hair.
Okay, I'm feeling
to go head back down
there a little bit.
Sean's up too.
I know he was yelling at me
and he caught another monster pike down there.
Oh, I have to go down and grab water too,
and we don't have to melt snow. We're gonna just use the
the ice holes to collect water from. We just gotta boil it.
So that's nice and handy. It's easier and faster.
All right, before I head out there, I'm
going to stack up the wood in there.
I've got two pieces of balsam fir and one piece of maple.
I'm trying to stagger it that way.
So I've got a couple pieces of burning wood,
soft wood, and a piece of hard wood in there.
I hear Sean outside
So it's supposed to be the supermoon tonight.
I'm hoping it is.
If we're lucky, it will be.
Canteen cup.
Head down to the lake in Mount Waulda.
I was calling for the supermoon.
Super.
there's
a nice uh nice purple
sky either way oh super
moon damn sun bright
tonight there's not a
cloud in the sky i've got
myself my cup of water
that is quickly
becoming ice sean's
a little dead
set on getting some good pictures
of that moon i don't blame him he can take a good photograph
so i'm headed up back to the uh wood stove i'm gonna get
this water on the boil maybe make up a
hot drink, coffee or something.
So much darker
in here in the woods.
I can hear it
pumping out.
Oh, she's warm.
I can feel it.
Pop,
pop,
pop,
pop.
Pop,
pop,
pop.
Decapped and then it says I was pulling the lines up,
ended up catching I think the biggest pike of the day.
So I have those frozen outside, most of the pike.
I only have two pike fillets in here and the perch.
So I'll cook those up and I'll bring the rest
of the pike back to the cabin.
I think what I'll do is put some water
and some
butter
in this.
We were really banking on some fish.
Getting fish.
Confidence was high.
Big shout out to everybody who emailed me
and commented about the splits on the finger
on the last video.
Excuse me.
It helped.
I was really worrying about that on this trip
because my hands are gonna be, excuse me again,
getting all beat up on this trip and cold
and in all the gloves and stuff,
but the super glue worked like a charm.
That was good.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.
She's cooking.
There's the finished product.
The plate's cold, so it's not staying warm very well.
First
test.
It's very mild.
Extremely mild.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, it don't taste much at all.
Not bad.
Not bad, son.
Healthy?
Mm-hmm.
Better than, healthier than fries.
Healthier than french fries?
We're gonna head down to the lake.
It's been booming like crazy.
You just see it's like big, big, loud bass booms.
So I'd like to capture some of that on film,
or I guess audio.
And I'd like to check out the super moon.
See how, see how that guy's doing.
We'll go check out
the ice hut.
super moon pretty big man pretty bright too i can
see over here with no lights at all like i can
walk completely perfectly fine there's
no cities around here by far you can't see me you can't see
me but i can see it no cities around here
no like light pollution it's just legit from that super
moon which is pretty cool camping in a super moon might
be a first for me oh man i literally just
missed it have my my camera
off big booms lights
a bit bright just
a bit bright oh my goodness
ah pretty cool glad to be able to catch some fish through
the ice a little bit different uh
different content break it up a bit i think uh having
this hot tent out it's really making me
want to do a camp with scout so i think i'm going to go up for two
or three nights with him pretty
soon i'm not too sure where maybe
that other property maybe back in another place it is nice
walking across lakes I do like
that so maybe we'll go somewhere where there's a
lake I can cross bring the hot tent stay there
for a few nights with them
hear it that's
a nice glow coming
from the tent there
alright we just got
back from down at the lake we decided
we should go down and try some night
fishing for walleye
was not successful we didn't stay down there for too long
anyway that's alright we've had our fill on pike
and yeah it's nice to be back in
the warmth here so it's late it's like oh it's nine
o'clock i'm almost ready for bed i've been
tired since about seven so time might
be an early night we tore down the um the shelter the the ice
hut while we're down there so that tomorrow
morning we can get up and get out of here i'm
like eight hours from home or something like
that so it'd be nice to get up and get out pretty early
in the morning so tore that down
and uh i'm about ready for bed you tired shauno tired he's outside
He's giving me some alone time.
All right, folks.
Oh, it's only 10 after 9.
We're about ready to turn in.
I'm exhausted.
Sean's already all cuddled up, cozy in bed.
So I think this will be it for tonight.
I'll get you guys up in the morning.
I probably won't do much.
What do you got going on in the morning?
Are you getting to do breakfast?
Are you quick?
Yeah, I'll have some bread.
I'll make it anything.
I'll just grab a piece of bread and eat it.
Yeah, see, I think that's the same.
I have bars I can do bars there you go
bars in the morning and on out of here
and then eight hour drive
so this is a pretty diverse trip for me two different
separate things the day at Sean's the night at Sean's
and then day out here
and then night out here
so pretty cool I'm happy I came happy I was able to do this
meet up with Sean again I haven't seen
him since like I said one time really
quick maybe a few months ago and then Woodland Caribou
which is almost a year ago now so it's a
long time coming so i'm going
to lay here maybe talk about some future trips and uh yeah maybe
i'll let you guys in on that in the future
but uh for now it's a good night i'll see you in the
morning good morning guys it's
about 6 30 i'm just packing up
to get on out of here my uh my
old sleeping bag i brought for this trip
the uh zipper ended up breaking in the middle of the
night so it was wide open I had to kind of tuck it under me
and it was lots of
fun needless to say I'm frozen my hands are pretty cold
so packing up camp
gonna get hiking out of here
so we can warm get warmed up from hiking out of
here getting
lighter sweating
I had to take off
my toque and
everything crazy
hot
