Hey, where are we going?
We're off to Algonquin Park. Again.
For how many days?
Four days.
Three nights. What are we doing there?
Lunch in front of the kiosk.
We're going to Mouse Lake.
And then?
And then Maple Creek and then back home.
And what are we going to do there?
Music.
What's up guys?
We just got to Kiosk Lake.
Checked in.
Got our stuff ready.
I have Oriana with me.
We'll see how this goes. Four days.
Should be sunny every day.
Hopefully we don't get bugged out.
Any last words?
This is going to hurt.
The lake is beautiful.
It's calm already.
It's nine o'clock.
Nine o'clock.
So we'll see you on the river.
It's Father's Day weekend.
I just turned 40.
And I'm about to find out if I can survive
33 kilometers of paddling
and 27 kilometers of portage.
Day one, Kiosk Lake to Mouse Lake.
Here we go.
Alright, so we just set sail.
Left Kiosk.
We're heading to our first
portage to make it
into
Mink. First, Little Mink.
And then
we've got about a five hour
trek to Mouse Lake.
Weather's
beautiful.
We'll see how this goes.
We're just approaching our first portage.
We're going to be heading into Little Mink
Lake.
Doesn't look too long. 640.
We'll see how it goes.
I've got my little trusty hat.
It makes me feel like an
explorer. So I wear it.
Oriana thinks it's dorky.
But Oriana has one also.
Is this the right way?
Uh, no.
Hard no.
Definitely not going that way.
What?
Okay, so we just had to
carry the canoe
around that dam.
Sorry, over the dam.
Through the bush.
And now there's more dam
here. I don't think this is the way.
This can't be the way.
There's no portage mark anywhere.
This is
something else.
Check this.
Now we have to get through here.
What a problem you are, little guy.
Hopefully we'll figure it out.
Looks like a bit of a
clearer path here.
I think
there's more blockages
there.
And we made it.
Little beaver was
the problem.
Well, that was one hell of an experience.
We just did our longest portage
of the day. About
1100 meters
from Mink Lake to
Club Lake.
It wasn't that bad. The only thing is
the bugs. You can't stop.
That's the shitty part.
You put down bags and you want to take a break
and they're just devouring you so you just gotta keep going.
We ended up dragging
canoes and double carrying
canoes and it was just
chaotic. But we're out.
Now we're on our way to Maus.
One more portage. Five something
meters.
And then we're there.
We're almost at our site.
And it's 4 o'clock.
We left at what time? 9.15?
That's a chunk
of a day. That's hard. The last
portage was a bit of a killing.
What's that?
It was not an easy day.
Coming up
we got a little beach.
There's our marker for the
campsite. And we'll
be back once we set up shop.
Well, we finally made it.
Kiosk Lake to Maus
Lake. Let me tell you
it wasn't easy.
The portages
alone are intense.
I even
rented an ultralight canoe instead of
mine that I have at home which is like 50
pounds lighter and it
made no difference in that
terrain so
still awesome to do.
Glad we got through it
and we're going to have a day and a half here now
to see
have fun and do some fishing.
On Maus Lake, two days,
day and a half.
Namaste.
We are making
fish and mushroom
risotto.
Looks nice. Very woodsy.
No more woodsy than I would have liked.
I would have liked some salmon.
Alright, so
first meal, well
we just ate our book trout so second meal.
We're going to have some
what is it again?
It's dehydrated
garlic parmesan
mushroom risotto
homemade.
Let's see how she works out.
She's delicious is what she is.
Nice and crunchy.
It's the cheese.
I know it's the cheese.
Can you hear it?
I broke
my tooth.
I should have
learned this from last time but
I made mac and cheese last time with real cheese
and it doesn't reconstitute so
cheese doesn't
that's why people use powdered cheese so
the parmesan in here.
I'm not putting that garbage in my food.
No, that's ok.
I'm just saying.
There's got to be a way to do it though.
Because the rice isn't crunchy.
No, the rice is fine.
Mushrooms a little bit.
Mushrooms are a little chewy.
What else is in it? Onions?
Tiny bit. Chives.
Garlic.
Cream.
We're the only ones in the lake
today and tomorrow.
I think we're the only ones in the park
to be honest.
We haven't seen anybody.
Well, in our first 10 minutes we saw kayakers heading back.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a
beauty day. 30 plus.
Hopefully that kills the bugs.
We brought dessert too.
Homemade apple crisp.
We'll see how that reconstitutes.
Pretty clear.
There's no ---- in it.
No gas.
No pollution.
Just fish.
Fish guts.
Oriana made some
apple crisp.
I'm not even convinced
there's apples in it.
It didn't reconstitute very well.
It's actually pretty good though.
It tastes like caramel mush.
Caramel applesauce.
Really? It's not mine.
It just wasn't reconstituting
fast enough so she put it on the fire
and it melted.
Of course I was out getting water
like a man.
Doing life saving
things.
Oh wait, I just got an apple.
That was better.
That's just pretty damn good.
It's like
apple creme brulee.
It's got a burning top.
I think I have
firewood in here.
Firewood.
It works.
The chunks are good.
Everything's good.
A little bit.
It's like
the perfect amount of sweetness.
I don't think so.
I need more of this.
Yeah but you need
deep fried dog ----.
I have
probably eaten
deep fried dog ----.
Wow.
Done.
Yeah the little chunks are good
but the saucy ----
I love it.
It melted all the oats
and the crumbles.
Yeah.
Yep.
There's none.
Well
there's some for tomorrow night
too. For dessert.
Maybe I'll cook it this time.
Yeah okay. Good.
Rodney versus Rihanna.
Apple crisp off.
We've eaten a lot though.
I'm glad we've eaten
the brook trout. I'm full.
And then risotto. Crunchy rib
risotto. That's right.
And then melty apple sauce.
That's right.
When you like
pick the remainders out of your teeth
it's good.
It was more like rice crisp and
apple risotto.
Apple crisp risotto.
You just did it backwards that's all.
Apple risotto and rice crisp.
I'm gonna catch
tomorrow my goal six fish.
I haven't seen you catch six fists in three years.
Wow. Fish. Not fists.
Yeah. Fists. You're about to
******* catch a fist.
I didn't see any yet of you guys.
Ah.
But look at the crazy glue.
This is why I'm tied to my face now.
So day one is done.
What time is it? Oops.
Bad fingers. 7.30.
Day one is way done.
Whoa. Okay.
We were gonna have drinks but now we're like.
I'm not putting muck in my body.
No. Not this minute.
No.
Tough day.
There wasn't supposed to be any wind
and we had some wind. It was supposed to be tail wind
and it was head wind.
But that canoeing
wasn't terrible. That was pretty easy.
No. Canoeing was really enjoyable.
It was enough of it though but it was
It was a nice reprieve
from the freaking bugs and the flies.
Yeah.
It's the only time we got a break.
Yeah.
And then tomorrow morning, wake up, have some coffee.
Probably have a
mouse lake bath.
And then we have the day off tomorrow
because we're not moving from this spot so we're gonna do some fishing.
And I broke my fishing rod today.
Because I'm a
bass master and
now I'm a trout master because I found
speckle.
Finally.
That was a big
broke too.
I broke my rod.
But we ate it. It was delicious.
So hopefully
tomorrow we can catch some more.
I know.
See you all tomorrow.
It's a wet door right
down there.
All in all, we had a
fantastic sleep last night.
I must have slept a solid like 8 hours.
It was cold.
But I don't know.
I was good because I'm used to it
from last time.
I actually slept.
It's true. I feel like I slept.
My back hurts though but whatever.
Get the fire started.
It's like 7.30.
We actually got out of the tent pretty late.
Pretty usual.
I'll have some breakfast.
Gather some firewood.
Hopefully do some fishing.
We've had our coffee and
we went for a little walk to see
the site next door because we share
a beach with them.
I think we're going to move our stuff over today.
It's a much better site.
There's a table so my stuff
is not going to be everywhere.
It's really not that
far of a walk.
The thunder box here has been flipped.
I don't know who's flipped it but that's pretty
shitty. If it's a human and if it's
not a human then
I'd put it back
on it's top but it's not level
and I'm not going to go play in that stuff.
I'll just let the yogis know.
We're at our new site.
Tent.
We like this site much better because there's a table.
We have our fire pit and
our mosquito
tent is going to go here we're thinking.
We're closer to the water. It's a little more open
so we're thinking maybe it'll warm up a little bit faster
with the sun.
Really? Binoculars?
What are you looking at exactly?
Safari explorer.
Anyway, that's the site.
I'm pretty tired this morning
so I might have a nap.
I haven't figured it out yet.
I'm sore from yesterday
and
recouping I did have to take some Advil
so I'm feeling a little warmed up
and loose and
should get better
as the day goes.
Breakfast on the table today.
We've got oats
organic, gluten free
with dehydrated strawberries and
blueberries and goji berries.
Water is cooking
and ready to go shortly.
Breakfast is
served.
I just paddled back.
Orianne is taking a little break here. She's going to do some yoga
and stuff. I just paddled
back to the first
portage of how we got here from
Club to Mouse
Lake.
It doesn't look so bad right now but it's hard to push
in that water.
I'm going to go do some fishing.
I saw a waterfall not far from here
so I'm going to go check it out while she
takes a break.
See if we can catch some more brooks.
Alright, so I was expecting it to be a little deeper
here based on
yesterday but I was pretty tired so
I'm going to try it anyway.
See what we can find.
You never know. Don't need much water to
survive in so let's try it.
The biggest question
was in the last chapter
you gave me the soul
I have today
without you I never could have moved away
now I see what you teach
I do believe I always should have stayed
Is this
really happening
I can't believe it's true
I just
surprised as you
Is this really
happening
I wonder what it's like
We made dehydrated
food for today. Hearty beef
stew. That contains
pasta.
Who puts pasta in their stew?
Yeah, so
we'll see. It's not gluten free
so we're going to have upset stomachs.
But Thunderbox has a
toilet seat here so
Oh, piece of beef.
Yeah, barely.
I think homemade dehydrated meals are
******* 10 times better.
It's okay. The texture
is better than what our food is but
But we also let it
sit much longer.
Hours? No, these ones
12 minutes.
Yeah, it's well
reconstituted but
I prefer food.
I could definitely eat more.
But we don't need to be
crazy full either.
Alright, I'm back.
Oh, here's another fisherman.
It looks like a
digestive trout of some sort.
You pig!
Well, good
afternoon. What are we
having for dinner tonight?
Homemade
dehydrated
shepherd's pie.
Made with Idaho potatoes.
That is good.
So good.
We overwatered the meat again so
the flavor's gone but
if you've ever tried Idaho
potatoes, you know
where it's at. They're nasty but good.
Mmm.
Welcoming flavor.
I feel like I'm going to wolf this down.
Which would be nice right about now.
Salt, pepper.
Delicious.
So fishing today sucked.
We got a rock bass.
The lake is crazy
rough. We had to puddle
all the way to the other
side and left
ourselves drift back
and that only lasted
about 15 minutes so
it's just brutal. It's windy,
it's rough, it's not pleasant.
Not at all proficient.
Don't mind.
Tomorrow will be good.
Tomorrow right off the bat we have 300 meters
What is that?
3,000 meters.
Portage. Portage right off the
bat. So that's
going to be crazy. Bright and early.
Bright and early.
And then we're off to Maple
Lake.
And then Maple.
Maple.
That's it for day 2.
I've been catching fish all day.
Ariana's caught like
none.
How's the fishing?
But anyway, it's a beautiful evening.
And we're going to pack up early
tomorrow morning and head to our next spot.
Got some big portages first thing
in the morning and then hopefully smooth
sailing so we'll see you guys in the morning.
Champ is still
trying to catch her first fish here.
I'm trying to teach her it was hard.
It's hard to teach her this.
It's hard. It's good.
She's not that good.
Look at this.
She caught a
half inch.
I don't even know what that is.
American chub maybe.
It's a...
Anyway. It's okay.
At least she caught something.
What happened? Did it bite you?
Did your hook get caught in your finger?
My uncle.
We're having coffee.
Turned into an alien.
We're going to start packing up.
We're heading to
Maple Lake today.
We've got some crazy portages.
But the lake is nice and calm.
Good for
paddling. Not so good for yesterday
for us fishing.
Today would have been a great day. But anyway.
We're going to troll either way.
Yeah, yeah. For sure.
For sure.
We're going to pack up and then
we'll keep going.
We're leaving. We're all packed up.
Ready to go.
Water is beautiful
and still.
It'll take us
maybe 20 minutes, half hour to get across
the lake to our first portage.
Rodney's just finishing up.
Making sure everything
is good and then we're off.
Right babe? Yep. Bye bye.
Big ass portages to do.
Bye bye Mouse Lake for now.
We're ready for them this morning.
See you guys in a bit.
We're ready to go
again. A little rested. We had a
down day but it's time to go through
some more grueling challenges.
Today we're heading from Mouse Lake.
Our first destination through Maple Creek
and to Maple Lake at the very end.
How calm
Mouse Lake is
right now. For the last
two days it's been like white cap
after white cap all morning
all night and now it's like
crystal clear and we're leaving.
We're heading to Maple Lake.
It's Murphy's Law.
But I appreciate where it is
and
I can already see our first portage from
now.
Still at the edge of Mouse Lake
here. Just about to hit the portage but
Oriana's fishing
because we saw some fish jumping
but there's an actual spring here.
I'm going to try and find it
to fill up that bottle
before we start trekking. Oh wow,
ever dirty in here.
Nice little
spot here.
Oh, she's cold.
That's why there's rookies here.
Very cold. Oh my god.
Crystal clear. Crystal clear.
Alright.
First portage.
It's already really buggy
but we're going to try and take our
time as much as we can
just to kind of
save some energy
but we'll see
how that goes.
Pack run first and then back for the
canoe and food bag.
Okay, we just got to
the second portage.
I guess it's 135
meters which
right now feels like a cakewalk
but it looks like
there's a little bit of a hill.
A little bit.
But we'll see you on the flip side.
So we're at the end of the second
portage. It felt like 30 seconds.
We have a bit of a paddle
now and then a 1500
meter portage
left to go.
Rodney's been a trooper.
Portage number
two of the day.
1500. Oh wait, no, we got to go
back and get a canoe
and a wet bag, dry bag.
But we're here.
Érable.
Urables.
There's a bee after me.
That one was challenging
compared to the first one. I thought the first one
was bad so we may just be getting
tired but
at least now we just go get the rest of the stuff
come back and we're done for the day.
Second portage done.
The biggest and the baddest
is over.
Now we're on Érable
Lake. We're heading to
a small little 170 meter
but Érable Lake is pretty
big so we'll be here for a while.
We're excited to be landing
and cooking food and doing all that
good jazz so
I'm just not excited.
Crazy.
Just had the best
swim. The best deserved
earned
swim.
So we're at our new site
and once we set up we can give you a little
tour but it's an island
and it's
quite sunny.
We had to jump in off those rocks over there
but we're going
to eat and set up shop
and then we'll give you a little tour.
That was an exhausting day.
We had about
4500
meters of portaging.
Very challenging portages
but
we got through.
Barely.
We got to our last site.
Sleeping here tonight and then off tomorrow
back home
to the concrete jungle
unfortunately.
But we're going to do the best we can
tonight. Oriana's already
fishing. We've had some food.
We were exhausted. We had a swim. We didn't
record anything because we just wanted to
get it done. We just jumped in the water.
We were exhausted and hot. We're on a little
island. It's all set up.
We'll see if we can catch
some dinner.
What's this delicious stuff?
Wow. Homemade meal.
Grilled chicken jambalaya.
Whatever that means.
It's got to be Mexican or some stuff.
Mexican.
Creole.
Well
constitutioned.
Reconstituted. Reconstructed.
It's very good.
It's got a little bit of a kick to it.
It's very
Nicaraguan.
Not at all.
There's a long way to that restaurant in Nicaragua.
In
Granada.
What do you think?
It's good.
I'd do this one again.
The stew is
okay.
But I'd do this one again.
We had chili for lunch today.
Man, it was good. We made it at home
though. Then dehydrated it.
It was very good.
So good.
There's so many ants here.
We just went out fishing for an hour.
Caught a fish.
Oh, that was yay big.
It's 9 for us.
It's 9 o'clock.
Exhausted.
Another big day tomorrow
but also heading home.
Fishing has been atrocious.
We had like
a show of rock bass babies today.
That's about it.
So good night.
we've got another show of
small ones.
Then we're paddling a creek
all the way back.
Anywho,
Maple Lake sucks for fishing.
