Man in critical condition after NYC subway shooting at 53rd Street-Seventh Avenue station

Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Newsroom Live. I'm Richard Giacova streaming live here from the Fox 5 Newsroom here on Fox Local. Thanks for joining us. We break in to bring you breaking news out of Midtown Manhattan. A man has been shot on board a subway train in Midtown. Our Stephanie Bertini just got to the scene. She is at 53rd and 7th. She just arrived there. We're learning details as fluid. It's happening right now. Stephanie, what can you tell us? Richard, so we just heard from the NYPD that this happened on the northbound E train platform. It's Saturday afternoon. We're in the middle of Manhattan in Midtown and you can see obviously a lot of people around here are going to be wondering what's going on. Right behind me, you can see this entrance here to the subway station blocked off. It's located here on West 53rd and 7th. Across the street, we actually have another camera in that area. There's another station also blocked off, another entrance to the station, I should say. This is, again, a very active and fluid situation, as you put it, Richard. The information I was just able to confirm with the NYPD, is that a call went out for help. It was before 1230, around 1221. There was reports of a shooting. The NYPD confirming one male victim was shot on the platform, the E-Train platform, and taken to a nearby hospital. No details on the shooter. So no details at all. That victim is a male victim. FDNY giving us some similar information. We're hearing from FDNY that that hospital may be Bellevue. A lot of questions specifically, why did this happen? What led to this shooting? When something like this happens in the middle of Manhattan at a subway station, a lot of people that have heard about the incident or maybe witnessed it, they're going to worry about their own personal safety. So we're asking the police what might have led to this. Was it some sort of dispute on the platform? We don't know. We don't have those answers, but we're trying to get details confirmed. Again, a very active situation. I'm going to step out of the way so we can push in to this entrance to the subway station. And we also want to show you the onlookers. There's a lot of people in this area. If we could pan to the people here, Lawrence. Lawrence is behind the camera for us, our photojournalist. And you could see people want to know what's going on a lot of questions when you see the entrance to the subway station blocked you're gonna have those questions now if you were on the platform it was surely some scary moments indeed the NYPD is actively working the scene here several officers also across the street as I mentioned and a lot of media in the area here as this happens in the middle of the day so that's what we have from the scene here now Richard I don't know if you have any questions. You're seeing kind of what we can show you through the lens. Is that subway station still closed, Stephanie, or has it been shut down? So I did hear someone passing by kind of wondering why they couldn't get into the subway station. From what we see, it is completely taped off from our vantage point. There's an entrance here. There's an entrance across the street. And we do see it completely taped off and police in front of each entrance here, Richard. Yeah, I mean, this is the heart of Midtown Manhattan. And we know that that victim last we heard, according to the FDNY, Stephanie, is that he is in critical condition. Yeah. Yeah. Critical condition is what the NYPD is confirming as well. Rushed to a nearby hospital. Yeah. So I did ask police, was it a situation where there were a lot of shots fired? Was it more just an individual being hit by a bullet. They couldn't really clarify. I was trying to really get a hold on details, Richard, that would help us understand if this was an issue where everyone is at risk. If one person was targeted, we don't have those exact answers, but we do know one male victim shot in critical condition at a nearby hospital. We do know that there are no details that police are releasing on the shooter. So that means no arrest as far as we know. So there could be a suspect out there. Again, this is unfolding now. It's a breaking situation, and we're working to get more details. And we don't know if this was an innocent person who was shot, if this was a dispute, again, between two people who knew each other. Those are the details that Stephanie is going to work for us.
