And a police car slams into the back of a bus with kids on board.
I just heard a big bam in the back of the bus.
How an officer ended up stuck underneath the bus he hit.
And that is our top story here at 5 Tonight.
Take a look at these pictures for yourself.
You can see the front of that patrol
car completely underneath the school bus.
Thanks for joining us, everyone.
I'm Jack Royer.
Good evening.
I'm Hannah McKenzie.
Troopers tell us it was the officer
who crashed into the back of the bus,
wedging his cruiser right underneath.
Now, this all happened in Ocala during
the morning rush hour just before 7 a.m.
That bus was in the process of picking up students at the time.
It was stopped when the collision happened.
Fox 35's Matt Trezza joining us live now.
So, Matt, you spoke with parents
who were actually watching their kids get onto that bus at the time.
Not only for the parents, but also for the children.
I spoke with some of them as well.
This is Hammett Bowen Junior Elementary School behind me.
That's where the bus was headed.
This is video from right after the crash.
first responders surrounding the school bus after
a Gainesville police cruiser slammed into the back
of it. Second grader London Campbell says she was on the bus
when it happened. I just heard a big
bam in the back of the bus. Did you feel anything?
Did it shake? What happened? It just moved up and
it shook. Fifth grader Eric Montero says he
was just about to get on the bus before the crash.
I was just, just crazy, just everywhere, just smoke.
I was just, I did not believe how I was
the only one who didn't answer the bus.
Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened just before
7 a.m. at the intersection of Southwest 49th Avenue Road
and Southwest 82nd Place Road.
They say for some reason the officer didn't see
the stopped bus and smashed into it.
I do believe, obviously fatigue likely played a role.
He just worked a long overnight shift.
EMS sent the officer to the hospital in serious condition.
FHP Captain Jonathan Young says the officer is very lucky to be alive.
There was an extensive intrusion into the passenger compartment.
He got very lucky with where the impact was.
Six inches to the right, we probably would have had a different story.
FHP says 13 students were on the bus.
One student, the driver, and an aide on the bus went
to the hospital with minor injuries.
Parents tell us the accident has them scared.
People drive over here absolutely too fast, too fast.
I'm pretty frustrated because I understand it's
an ongoing investigation,
but I have no way to get any other answers.
We reached out to Gainesville Police for information about the incident
and their officer. We haven't heard anything back yet.
FHP hasn't released to us the officer's name.
They say they are still investigating this crash,
and it's too early to say whether there may be some charges pending.
We're live in Ocala, Matt Trezza, Fox 35 News.
