Deadly shooting in an upscale Northwest D.C. neighborhood.
Residents say they warned the city for months about an alleged squatter
who took over a million-dollar home.
Now one man is dead, and the Palisades community
is terrified and outraged.
Fox News' Bob Barnard has the bizarre story from Northwest.
The house where the man apparently shot and killed himself
is right behind me, behind those trees there.
It's a property that the people
who live in this neighborhood say has become alarming.
They say the woman who lives there has been trespassing
and was live streaming last night at the time of the fatal shooting.
The neighbors who showed us
this video say they're too afraid to go on camera
to talk about last night
or what's been going on at that house for months now.
D.C. police say the initial call last night was for a burglary,
then became a shooting.
Police describing this as a death investigation,
believing 49-year-old Mostafa Kermichi shot and killed himself.
The woman who lives here says
the shooting happened up on that back deck.
She and a man visiting today invited us into the backyard,
but didn't want to speak on camera about what happened.
The man says the victim was a friend of hers with benefits.
Neighbors tell us the woman is a trespasser,
doesn't know the homeowner,
has been in the house with her 8-year-old daughter since June.
They say she was invited into the house by somebody doing construction
work as the overseas owner was preparing to sell the property.
The local ANC commissioner says police have been called
to this address multiple times in the past few months,
that there was even another shooting here earlier this week.
If you don't have a lease and the person is in the house,
you still have to go to landlord-tenant court.
You can't just turn off the electricity.
You can't send in goons to get them out.
You have to follow the law, and that means going
to landlord-tenant court and waiting your turn to get a hearing.
And apparently, even though the case might have been filed in June,
there's no hearing until November,
and that is disgusting, and that's a city problem.
People in the meantime
who live right around here in Palisades are afraid.
And they should be afraid.
When there's 911 calls at the level that we're having at this house,
there needs to be some kind of attention paid for by our city leaders,
and they've been completely inept at getting this case resolved.
According to online research,
the man at the center of last night's death investigation,
Mustafa Kermichi, had a court date two days ago
for felony domestic violence,
listed in court documents as an assault on a police officer.
We've also reached out
to the Ward 3 D.C. Council member about what's going on here.
We were told he was busy today and would visit this issue next week.
