Chip, thanks. One person is dead following an altercation with police.
Yeah, so officers were looking to arrest
the suspect for multiple warrants.
Fox 4's Dan Godwin live at the Dallas Police
Department headquarters with the details.
Dan, good morning.
Good morning, Paige.
There are still some questions about this incident
that an investigation will seek to answer.
at around 12:20 yesterday afternoon DPD officers
were at the Mustang Inn along RL Thornton Freeway
in Oak Cliff they were looking to arrest a man
with multiple felony warrants for narcotics as
well as probation violations police say they had traced
the man to this location using Flock
technology when officers knocked on the door
of the man's room they say he opened it and
pointed a rifle at them. Their information
indicates officers encountered the suspect
armed with a gun. The suspect was armed
and one officer fired his shots towards him. He was in
possession of a long rifle and he presented it towards
the officer and one officer discharged
his weapon. Assistant Chief Rhodes says
the officer fired at least one shot at the suspect.
It's not yet known if the man was hit by a police bullet.
That is still under investigation.
At this point, police say the man came out
of the room armed not with his rifle, but with a handgun.
They say he was given repeated verbal commands to drop the handgun,
which he did not follow.
Officers say he then turned the weapon on himself
and took his own life.
Another point that's being investigated,
whether the suspect fired any shots at officers.
None of them were hurt.
Police have not yet released the name of the man.
they were attempting to arrest.
