Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe Florida Panthers are preparing for a home game against the Vancouver Canucks. Key updates include the absence of Jacob Markstrom and Radko Gudas, both expected to return on October 21st. While the team is favored to win, there are slight concerns regarding Markstrom's early-season stiffness and a recent disciplinary fine for Matthew Olivier.
There are multiple Panthers updates on Radko Gudis and Jacob Markstrom.
Paul Maurice just came out after practice.
We have updates on both.
It's actually good news, but kind of bad news at the same time.
Kind of a double-edged sword.
We'll talk about that on this episode of Panthers Digest.
We'll also discuss tonight's matchup against the Vancouver Canucks,
as well as a look back at a dirty play
that happened against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Guys, this is Panthers Digest.
I'm your host, Greg Andrews. Comment, like, share, subscribe.
Hype up the video. I appreciate all of you guys tuning
in and supporting me, the channel, and your Florida Panthers.
And I do have a special salute to give
to a wonderful human being out there.
This gentleman was just inducted to the Broward Sports Hall of Fame.
Broward County Sports Hall of Fame. Excuse me.
I definitely have to give a shout out to him a little bit later.
But we're going to jump headfirst into this right now.
Here we go, guys.
So tonight, it looks like Akira Schmidt will get
the start for the second consecutive game.
I know a lot of people, when they probably saw this,
were like, oh no, what's going on
with Markstrom?
Why is he not playing?
Well, we don't really know exactly why he's not.
Again, that stiffness is probably still there.
I think they just want to let him rest.
I mean, it's a lot to go on these road trips,
and he's played a good amount of hockey so
far and been very good.
So obviously, they don't want anything
happening to him with the start that he's had.
so with that said i think schmidt looked very good
in the last game obviously letting up those last
two goals towards the end of the third period eh whatever kind
of took our eyes off the prize but
whatever it is what it is he played well i'm
not too worried about tonight going up against a
struggling canucks team but everybody brings
their a game against the florida panthers so let's keep
talking about this and moving ahead here we go gudas
is coming out of the ice midway through
the morning skate today looks like he's not going
to be playing tonight kind of bad news obviously
he left the game against columbus for a little bit took
a little knee-to-knee contact i think
this is more precautionary what you're about
to see right here chanette schmidt in net per per
paul maurice and markstrom and gudas will likely return versus ottawa
on october 21st i believe this is
more rust than it is anything else that's it there
was not a whole lot else that Paul Maurice put out
there it was pretty much the same thing they already said
that they took uh Markstrom out of
net against Buffalo as a precaution
because of stiffness Gudis obviously with that knee-to-knee
contact probably just letting him take a little bit more
of that time to just recover get on the
ice when you can work things out he'll be fine i'm sure on the 21st
so we're good all good news
guys like i said this is perfect to hear regarding
your starting net minder and your sixth man on
defense so let's oh wait before i get into this next piece here that's
who i wanted to actually
give some credit to the NHL did fine Matthew
Olivier five thousand dollars the maximum allowable
under the CBA for the cup check against Uvas Balinskas during
the 73 winning against columbus
yeah it was a dirty ass move good news good thing
that he got the five minute major and the
misconduct was booted out of the game i mean like he's
not known to be a dirty player but really
like what what the hell got into you man come on be smart about it
so good thing that he got
fined he should learn to not do that kind
of crap again i don't know what you're thinking in the in
the heat of the moment why should you cup check a guy
when you clearly you know you're gonna get
seen and it's gonna happen it's gonna get called
and you're gonna be gone and my big call out big
props Caesar Lucero that's big C's guys he has
been a major major Panthers fan for years
congratulations sir on getting inducted
into the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame
what an honor i am proud of you you've worked
your butt off your podcast is great thank you
for having me i look forward to future conversations
on that podcast with you and
your co-host JP I'm excited congratulations again what
an incredible night for you getting
shouts out from Van Beesbroek
from Bill Zito head coach Paul Maurice god what a moment for you I
wish I could have been there again congratulations
big C's again you can catch his podcast out there
Caesar Lucero congratulations man big things still to come for you
and I hope I can get in there for
some Panthers games with you one of these days anyways take
a look at tonight's game here we go
Vancouver, coming into town after
the Kachuk brothers posted nine points
in one game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Hat trick for Brady Kachuk with an assist
Brady Kachuk, five assists, three of them to his brother
Power play was four of six.
They are coming into this one hot, and they know they want this big win
after losing the home opener pretty badly to the Minnesota Wild
It wasn't even close in that game.
We were outrun, outgunned.
everything fell apart for us not a good game for us by the way man
what Kachuk has said
he feels so much better this year he's moving better he's ready to go
and i think we can see
that by the way that he's playing with the 10 points
that he has under his belt three goals
seven assists just rolling i think it's going
to continue look for Sam Reinhart Brady Tkachuk
i think Sam Bennett's going to finally get on the board
with a goal tonight look for that and we're
to talk about the lines in just a minute
but i can't wait for this one 7 p.m. puck drop or like
7 10 somewhere around there we should hopefully i mean we're favored
to win this i think we're
minus 298 or something
but never ever discount any team that we're facing everyone's going to
run and gun for us and give us their a plus game
but i think the Panthers should have this one
pretty easy hopefully this will be two
in a row w's 10 points in the Atlantic Division and move
up the board a little bit see what happens
so anyways let's take a look at the goaltender
matchups tonight. I'm going to put the Saturdays
so you guys can see this a little bit better. They have
one guy who's been playing great.
One win, one loss,
Meriläinen. 2.4 goals against the average,
926 save percentage. Then you've got
Lankinen. One win,
five losses, not a good start for him. Almost
seven goals against the average and a 76
save percentage. We have been playing great.
Goaltending has not really been that much
of an issue. Yeah, Schmid has had a couple
of goals that he's let in pretty easily.
Again, at the end of the game against Columbus Blue Jackets,
a couple of, I'm going to say a
brain lapses, defensive lapses by the Florida Panthers
that allowed the Columbus Blue Jackets
to get those two goals at the end of the game.
It really should have been a 7-1 game. It should
have. I'm not going to look at this any other way
that Schmid should show up in this game and be
great, especially at home.
I look for him to have a very solid game as well. As far as the team
matchups, here we go, guys. We're better across the board.
Our goals for is lower, but we are
great in terms of our defense i've said we were shoddy
in the last several games our five on five
has actually been surprisingly good we've had some lapses like i said
on the counter for the other
team we've been caught out of position
and the other teams are taking advantage of heading in
the opposite direction we've got to be careful
with our passes we cannot let things go and let
these guys get on those those those fast break
opportunities man up we got to be careful on the
PK or excuse me uh committing penalties
so we don't have to go on the PK even though our PK
looked pretty good against Columbus power play was great
and you can see here man what a jump
for our power play going from 3.8 percent to 18.4 percent massive
and our penalty kill has been good
no shorthanded goals for us they have two for them
but uh we have a ton of penalty minutes so do they
got to be careful on that that's going
to be our Achilles heel tonight we need to make sure that
we're better on our pk smarter
not committing stupid penalties obviously the ones that will
happen a little bit of roughing here and there
but the stupid ones like the trips or the holding
calls we got to be smarter than that especially
when we're in our offensive zone whenever a
holding call is being made
and you're in your offensive zone those are huge no-nos i mean every
coach just goes what are you guys doing what
are we doing here you don't commit those penalties in
your offensive zone unless you're stopping literally
a breakaway opportunity that's different
but anyways everything i think was pretty much
in the favor of the Florida Panthers tonight like i
said we are favored to win this one minus i believe 298
or 289 something around those numbers
the lines shouldn't surprise anybody the Tkachuk brothers
with Bennett on line number one for Hage
Reinhart, Lauriandsson, Lucirainen and Lundell, Vilmediate
and then Imama Eller and Hathaway the one thing
that is going to be out is that third defensive pairing Gudis will
be out tonight it should be
Ubus Balinskas in there instead of Gudis
So look for Forsling, Ekblad, Mikola Jones
Kulikov, and Balinskas out there
and it will be Schmid in net starting.
Markstrom will be on the bench.
I'm not really sure.
I think he will be on the bench.
Maybe it will be Cooper Black.
I think it might be him over Markstrom just in case.
So you've got a healthy netminder in there, not a guy you're like
okay, well, if he's got to go in there
you run the risk of maybe that guy getting hurt
So let's not do that.
But that is our lineup for tonight.
The good news, obviously, like I said,
is Markstrom is going to return on the 21st
as will Gudis
I think Markstrom's more precautionary.
I think that stiffness is kind of, to me,
a double-edged sword, like I said.
To me, it screams out a little more that, oh,
man, the stiffness shouldn't be happening
this early in the season.
I know it's a rough beginning
when you're on the road for a majority of the games, but
I don't know.
That one makes me, I'm kind of scratching my head,
like, really, how should we feel
about you missing a game because of stiffness getting pulled early
and now they're not going
to have you play till the 21st i'm kind
of questioning it am i a little worried yes am i
super concerned no but i still think that it should
be concerning for Panthers players the
coaching staff and the fan base
to say all right after how many games that he has played he's
already getting stiffness and we have to rest him
as a precaution i don't know i don't know i i've
got kind of a weird feeling about him he's playing
great playing great hockey but it remains to be
seen so hopefully all is well
and it should be if he's coming back on the 21st so cross your fingers
he is 100% fine again Palmieri did not give
a lot about what exactly is going on with him
so we'll see anyways tonight puck drop like i said 7 10 ish
so stay tuned for that should be a good
one hopefully the cats run away with it just like they did in Columbus
but this time show up at home
knocked the crap out of the Vancouver Canucks
and put up big two points so we have 10 in the
Atlantic Division hopefully everybody else above us loses
and we go back to being right at the top
of the division anyways that's it comment down
below guys again what do you think about Mark
Strom his injury is it a double-edged sword
are you worried are you not worried what about Gudas
how do you like the lines do you think Kaduk brothers
and Bennett should stay right where
they are even when Barkov
and Marchand do come back do you think things just stay right where
they are. Keep the chemistry where it is.
Maybe you put Verhaeghe, Barkov, and Reinhardt back on
that first top line. Maybe not the top line.
Maybe Bennett and the Kachuk brothers are your
new top line. Let me know what you guys think.
Interesting way to think about it. But that's it,
guys. Until next time, go Cats.
