Drivers tonight in Fairfax County,
some major changes come to local roads.
That's right, and they include lower speed limits.
Sydney Persing, live with us to walk us through all of the details.
We're listening, Sydney.
Well, and drivers at home really do want to listen closely
because in just a matter of days,
you are going to have to lower your speed
on 10 roads across Fairfax County, and more could be coming.
So here's what we know.
Earlier today, the county announced that on those 10 roads next week,
They're going to lower the speed limits
from 25 miles an hour down to 20 miles an hour.
And those roads are in the Drainsville, Mason, and Providence District.
The goal, the county officials say, is to improve safety.
The county said these changes, they're part
of a pilot study measuring impacts of reduced speed limits on roads
with the goal of making drivers, bikers, and pedestrians safer.
The county says it picks these impacted roads
by looking at pedestrian activity and crosswalks
and also the presence of schools nearby and more.
So here are the impacted roads.
This is where you'll want to pay attention.
First, in the Drainsville District, Douglas Drive from Georgetown Pike
to Barron Road, Barron Road from Randolph Road to Ingleside Avenue,
Ingleside Avenue from Barron Road to Dolly Madison Boulevard.
Then in the Mason District,
Patrick Henry Drive from Leesburg Pike to Beachway Drive,
Peace Valley Lane on the west side of Justice High School,
Beachway Drive from Patrick Henry Drive to Nevious Street,
Nevious Street from Leesburg Pike to Beachway Drive,
Blair Road from Beachway Drive to Glen Carlin.
Drive. And then finally in Providence,
Flagpole Lane from White Granite Drive to Board Street
and Bushman Drive from Board Street to Blake Lane.
And so if you're wondering why exactly
this is happening, well, we know in 2024,
the Virginia General Assembly essentially gave local
jurisdictions the authority to do this,
to lower speed limits on roads at 25 miles per hour down
lower if they're in business or residential areas.
And the county says that after these three zones
are implemented across the county in this pilot program.
They're going to look at other areas to
potentially target. Of course, as those changes develop,
we will keep you updated. Jim and Angie,
back to you. All right.
