The top story tonight, a homeless man is in jail
and several Georgia State students are still
shaken after a brawl left a Georgia State employee wounded.
Good evening, I'm Russ Spencer. I'm
Courtney Bryant. GSU says the attack happened
in a campus dining hall at three o'clock in the
morning. Fox 5's Angelique Proctor joins us live
from GSU where the attack happened. Angelique.
Well, good evening to you both.
This assault happened at the GSU campus of Piedmont Central
dining hall. You can see it is in the middle of downtown Atlanta,
and this is a very different
place once the sun goes down.
We are told tonight that that dining hall is open 24 hours a day
during the week. The guy,
he had like a metal chair on top of his head, and he was covered in
so much blood, and he was just like, he's coming back.
Georgia State University students were
shaken after witnessing the violent attack
at Piedmont Central Dining Hall Wednesday morning
at 3 a.m. A GSU police chief tells us
a dining hall employee mistakenly let a homeless man
inside the employee entrance.
When Carnell Ernest Hobson started eating a plate of food.
He was approached by another employee.
At that time, the employee told him he couldn't get,
he couldn't have the food, he couldn't eat,
he couldn't get in here. Witnesses say things
got out of hand and chairs started flying
when one of the employees the students call Unc asked
Hobson to leave. It was a physical confrontation between those two.
The students got involved and
actually kind of helped out the employees.
That specific chef, he's like my favorite. He's always
nice to me since I got here and I just couldn't let that happen to him.
And once he picked up the
last chair to go and hit him in the head,
that's when I ran and I grabbed the homeless guy.
Hobson took off running, but GSU police caught him minutes later.
Authorities are calling several
students who got involved heroes.
I do get that I understand what I did or what we did and I think
all of us sort of did it again.
Every single time I would do it over and over. Fox 5 learned Hobson
is known by police and has been arrested
in the GSU area several times before. The incident has
students questioning security.
At night it's a lot of people who do walk around here other than just
students. Now the chief notes that no security breach occurred.
He says the employee simply made
mistake by letting Hobson in.
He also says they have done some additional training with employees
since this incident. That is the very latest from downtown.
Angelique Proctor, Fox 5 News.
Well, good on the students for having the courage
to do the right thing. Angelique, thanks.
