Ray? Russ, police say it all happened in this parking lot last night. Police tell us that the victim was riding on a mobility scooter back to his car when he was caught in the crossfire. Now, as the family mourns, police are asking for help. Father, husband, public servant. That's how Ted McDaniel is remembering his father, 81-year-old James McDaniel. He was known as senior chief to a lot of people, but only four people could call him dad. Gainesville police say the 81-year-old died at the hospital after he was shot outside of this Walmart Wednesday night. He was in the Navy, he was in Vietnam. He worked for the post office for a really long time. Investigators say the shooting happened at about 7 p.m. Captain Kevin Holbrook says police want to figure out what led to bullets flying. There were a number of individuals who were there in that parking lot. Right now, we're just trying to determine exactly who were witnesses and who may be persons of interest in this case. Police say at the time, McDaniel was exiting the store on a mobility scooter and headed to his car. They're shooting across a busy parking lot with hundreds of vehicles, people everywhere, at each other. And unfortunately, this gentleman just gets shot and killed just trying to live his everyday life. Investigators say they are following some fluid leads regarding potential suspects as McDaniel's family seeks justice for their loved one. I'm just saying no matter what you do, you can choose your actions. You cannot choose the consequences. Police are reminding people to secure their firearms and not to do so in their vehicles. They are also asking anyone with information on a potential shooter to reach out to detectives immediately. Reporting live in Gainesville, Ray Dana, Fox 5 News. Ray, thanks.
