Welcome back. Well, the High Museum of Art is turning 100
and Atlanta's invited to the party.
The museum is taking over a stretch
of Peachtree Street. How about that for a free
centennial block party this weekend with live music,
art, food, and some big surprises. So
Erin Doherty, the High Museum's Director
of Public Engagement is here with what's in store. So Erin,
good morning to you. It's so good to have you here.
Thanks for having me. Of course. So let's
back things up a little bit. 1926. See, I didn't know this.
This was new to me. High Museum started
with the donation of a home and the rest is history
so it's been a hundred years years Hattie
High donated her home for the for us to create a school an art school
and museum and it started
from there on Peachtree Street same spot isn't
that amazing crazy yeah what a start to things
so we got to talk about this whole thing
of of closing down uh part of Peachtree Street because
that's going to be where this block party happens tell us what's
in store well we we are excited to
close down Peachtree Street
also shout out to the mayor's office of cultural affairs for saying
yes special event so thank you
for that um no we're shutting down the street between 15th and
16th street so the block in front
of the museum we're gonna have food trucks great food art making
awesome music djs the mayor's coming to give us
a shout out um Killer Mike who's one of our board
members will be there so yeah it's gonna
be a good day that is so awesome also the Atlanta
Hawks drum line the Hawks drum line they know what's up they
do um the Harry the Hawk will be
there um we will have uh Atlanta United there
um the Trap Music Museum is bringing the pink car
out of the museum for us to take photos
so yeah it's gonna be a big day yeah you know i feel like
it's very representative of the community of Atlanta as a whole
which is really what the High
Museum is all about right yep it's what's thank you
for saying yeah it's like all the things we
think about is we're the Atlanta Museum um and we want to be relevant
and want people to feel like
they are welcome there and that they see themselves both
in the galleries and like the other guests
that are there sure this is really cool you know
it's got me thinking too about it doesn't matter
how old you are there's something for you
at the High Museum my daughter's school did a field trip
there and and she had such a time
and all of her classmates did but that was such a great
introduction to the High Museum into art
into to everything that that that that entails i mean this
really is the city's museum that's our hope
and dream that you start coming we have a toddler
program called toddler Thursday
and our hope is that you start coming then get comfortable with
being at the museum and then keep coming to programs
and become a teen learning or teen
leadership council member and then keep coming as an adult
and bring your kids so yeah we always
want there is something for everyone truly there really
is so speaking of of you know getting
involved in collaborations
and that kind of thing love to hear about this Atlanta Braves hat
collaboration we're very excited um the Braves uh allowed us
to create a hat just for with our new
logo um for the 100th birthday
so it's uh atlanta braves hat with the hive logo on it you can get it
in the museum shop if you're there this weekend
that's very cool yeah okay so this is all going
down on sunday what time is is the party kicking off sunday sunday
from noon to five okay we'll be
up five yep whole family invited whole family
invited friends free it's free the museum is
is free to members as always uh but it's general admission uh
but the street party block fun is
free and you know what the weather's going
to be perfect for this i i have not been talking about
the weather but you can
because it's going to it's going to feel like fall too i am hoping that
that holds true get your little sweater
your little jacket oh it's gonna be nice museum
sweatshirt if you're too cold
so you know hey there's that there's that so this is really just
the beginning of the centennial celebrations this block party
so what else do you guys have in store
we have a lot of things happening coming up
so even this weekend tomorrow's friday jazz if you're
jazz lover come on out um six to ten at the high we
also have uh next week on the 21st access for
all, which will be a free day,
free access to the museum during the day. Yep. Every third Wednesday
of the month. So the 21st and then the 23rd,
there's a teen haunted night at the high. So if
you have a teenager who wants to go and meet friends and see art,
that's a good one. And then
on the October 30th, we're throwing a Halloween party called
a haunting at 100. What a job. That
sounds like a blast. What aren't we doing?
That's a shorter list. That's probably the better
question. And I asked you during the break, Erin,
if y'all are still doing, what's the name of the
event? Because it's what you see all over social media.
It's what everybody talks about. What is
it? High Frequency Friday. There we go.
Every first Friday of the month, we have amazing DJ
collaborators who help us select the best
and upcoming new old everybody in between DJs that
are in Atlanta. And it's a really fun night.
I got to tell you, Erin, I get FOMO when I see
the videos of everyone having a time
and i i need to go i need to be a part of this so you don't
have to be up the next day for your job here that's true
but that is such a hit every single
time really fun yeah that's worth it
so one of the many ways that you can celebrate 100 years
of the high museum of art so aaron thank you
so much for coming in and sharing with us yeah i hope
y'all come down to the museum there we go we got
to put it on our schedule for sunday right yes
Get on it. So you can celebrate the High Museum
of Art's 100th birthday Sunday at the free block party.
It's happening on Peachtree Street from noon to 5 p.m.
And like Aaron mentioned, it's going to feature appearances
by Mayor Andre Dickens, Killer Mike's going to be out there,
the Atlanta Hawks and much, much more.
Again, admission to the block party is free.
General admission to the museum is $23.50.
