8:43 now on this Thursday morning,
as we look back on what happened yesterday,
as promised, we had some hit miss storms in the area.
One of them hit downtown Austin.
Didn't last too long for about five, 10 minutes.
And then before you knew it, our skies were clearing up.
We had some clouds first thing this morning, but not as cloud heavy,
not as humid. So it's slightly cooler start.
No rain nearby on our max live radar. There's a tiny shower just south
of Gillespie County yesterday where you see the blue colors.
That's where we had the measurable rain cross sections
of Fayette, Southern Lee County,
and also from Lockhart up into the heart of the state.
Part of Austin, near Round Rock, Georgetown,
we had about a quarter to half an inch of rain.
But the big rain event is still unfolding off toward north and west.
Still under flood watches from Oklahoma City to Wichita Falls,
all the way down to San Angelo, Midland-Odessa area.
Checking out our sky cams across America.
First stop, Oklahoma City.
They got drenched yesterday.
They had over five and a half inches of rain.
They're bracing for more inches of rain today,
and this is going to enhance the flooding risk for them.
68 rain-cooled degrees.
and then let's go live to Odessa
and you see some rain clouds new rain clouds in the distance and
they're going to have that conveyor belt
of moisture pouring right at them giving them
rounds of rain from West Texas all the way up
into Oklahoma for us you will not need the umbrella
no weather issues driving into work
or driving home first thing tomorrow morning during the
first half of the morning commute the door opens up
for a little bit of rain when that front pushes
on through the rain will be in and out of here
and then those winds are going to crank up out
the north. It dries out, cools off,
and eventually shut down the rain and clearer skies. Now today,
no pop-up thunderstorms. The widespread rain will happen out here
in West Texas in advance of that
front that's going to drop in and pay us a visit.
And then by the time it gets here,
it's happening in the middle of the night.
That's the most stable part of the day.
We're just banking on the front alone
to provide enough lift to get some scattered showers going
and not a lot of thunderstorm activity.
The highest rain totals could happen across your
eastern counties. If you sleep in tomorrow,
you'll miss the rain, but then everybody's going to feel
that cooler, drier breeze coming at us from the north
with clearing skies as we roll into the
weekend. Not all the rain gauges are going to get hit tomorrow morning.
It looks like the highest
totals in Caldwell, Bastrop, Lee, and Fayette counties.
Here in Austin, three out of the four
models showing totals under a tenth of an inch, and I'm buying it.
60s and 70s this morning with
less cloud cover and less humidity.
We're running about 5 to 15 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago,
but still not even close to the average low of 62.
Average high is 83.
We've been above that for the last 10 days.
You know what?
Let's just make it 11 in a row.
At least we're not going to be making it
to the record high of 99 set just two years ago.
So it could be worse.
Sunset at 701.
We're going to go for the low 90s today.
A great-looking day, but not feeling like October.
Now, tomorrow, that's a different story.
Starts to cloud up while you're sleeping.
Turns rainy briefly before sunrise tomorrow.
And then the winds crank up out of the north
to pull in some of this cooler weather
that's just hanging out to our north.
Highs in the 60s and 70s from Amarillo to Midland and El Paso.
The rest of the state, 80s and 90s.
Get the summer supplies ready to go.
Sunglasses and sunscreen needed, not an umbrella.
And the winds won't be as strong today.
We'll make up for it tomorrow morning.
Winds will swing around from the north.
Could have wind gusts tomorrow, by the way, 30 to 40 miles per hour.
Flying across the country, heading
to the east coast, west coast, sunny, gorgeous.
Right down the middle of the country, not so gorgeous.
Lots of clouds, rain, and thunderstorms along this low front combo.
And we're waiting for this low to move eastbound,
knock out this blocking high, and slingshot that front through.
And all the pieces are coming together
for that welcome change late tonight, early tomorrow morning.
Brief round of rain, and then that cooler,
drier breeze takes over and get ready for the roller coaster ride.
90s today, and then 60s for highs Friday and also on Saturday.
That's a significant drop.
And then check out these morning lows.
That'll lower the temperatures even more.
Saturday and Sunday mornings, we're in the 40s.
And so this wave of chill is not going
to be in and out of here in no time.
It's going to last for several days and nights.
And we'll finally have some perfect football weather, DKR,
as we welcome in the Florida Gators.
11 a.m., kickoff on Saturday, 60 degrees.
So that means for tailgating in the morning, 40s and 50s.
And with that wind out of the north, 10 to 20 miles per hour,
It's going to make it feel even cooler,
so you may need the long sleeves.
And we're in the 60s all game long.
That's part one of the big weather story.
Part two, we'll finally get rid of the mugginess.
And it's going to feel amazing around here with the low humidity
that's going to hang around all weekend long.
But that's going to hurt our rainfall prospects after first
thing tomorrow morning, we start up another dry spell.
We may have to wait until beyond the seven-day forecast before
the weather pattern changes for increasing rain chances around here.
The next western low is slowing down, so we're going to delay
our next best chance rain until possibly next weekend.
Highs today, more 90s than 80s, with mostly sunny skies, not as breezy.
Still on the humid side,
making it feel slightly warmer than it actually is.
And the widespread rain and storm activity flirting
with the hill country late today.
And it'll be our turn to cash in on some scattered rain
from midnight to sunrise tomorrow.
And then that chilly northerly wind takes charge after that.
And it's going to bring back the chilly nights and cool days.
Huh, finally feeling like fall for a change.
Slowly warming up, but still seasonal
with dry skies for the first half of next week.
