Google's Quantum Computer Just Crossed a Line Nobody Has Before
Google's Willow can correct quantum errors, but the physical machine underneath can still drift out of tune while it runs.
A new Nature study shows Google using quantum error-correction data to steer more than 1,000 physical controls on Willow. Against injected drift, the system improved logical-error stability by as much as 3.5 times, and it still found additional improvement after conventional calibration and human expert tuning.
But the method has a strange catch: the controller has to disturb its own settings to learn which way to move them. This video follows what Google actually demonstrated, where the approach begins to fail, and why the real breakthrough is much more specific than a quantum computer that can simply look after itself.
